Quacker Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Hello All First posting on here and acting out of sheer desperation. This is from my father's PC - and try as we might we can not get youtube to work. I log onto youtube in the normal way (no problems on my own pc). then when I click on a clip i get the following message. Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player. So I follow the link to get the latest, and click the yelow bar at the top of the screen to allow Active X, follow the prompts, and it looks like everything is in order. Then after a while of what looks like downloading the download stops. Is there any way around this - as it looks like a small problem to have to buy a new pc for. Apologies if posted in the wrong section but couldn't find anything suitable. Regards Steve Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Hello Quacker Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Are you using the proper YouTube Downloader available here; YouTube Downloader - Software to download and convert YouTube video All downloads from YouTube should take seconds to down. Seth Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Hi Quacker. Please upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 if you haven't already, then remove all instances of Java from Add/Remove Programs. Finally, open IE7 and perform a reset to it: 1.Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. 2.On the Advanced tab, click Reset. 3.In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset. 4.When Internet Explorer 7 finishes restoring the default settings, click Close, and then click OK two times. 5.Close Internet Explorer 7. The changes take effect the next time that you open Internet Explorer 7. You should now be able to install Java. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Quacker Posted April 21, 2008 Author Posted April 21, 2008 (edited) Cheers both - without sounding too ignorant, this will not damage anything else will it? - I upgraded mine to IE7 a while ago but lost half of the icons inc. email - so switched back again! Wolfie I never heard of the downloader either - again mine works well without it. I'll give it a try - fingers crossed! Steve Edit: - thanks for the welcome by the way :-) Edited April 21, 2008 by Quacker Quote
Quacker Posted April 21, 2008 Author Posted April 21, 2008 Well i did as you mentioned. IE7 fitted - again where is the email icon?? I cannot receive or retrieve emails. When I downloaded and reset after following the instructions, i went to add/remove programmes -there was nothing in the java list. Then tried youtube, followed instructions and again unable to download. I just can't understand why it works on one machine and not another. Anyway, is there anyway i can make IE7 look like IE6 and get the mail back. Any other suggestions guys? Steve Quote

Seth Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 What mail tab are you referring to? Was it part of a toolbar? It must be, as IE doesn't have an inherent mail tab. Can you download other programs? Quacker Posted April 22, 2008 Author Posted April 22, 2008 Did you reinstall Java Quacker? Download Free Java Software - Sun Microsystems Sorry I'm confused now;) do I need to install Java - please note I said install and not re-install. What mail tab are you referring to? Was it part of a toolbar? It must be, as IE doesn't have an inherent mail tab. Can you download other programs? Hi Seth, I'm one of those who clicks on the mail icon in IE6 for access to email. There is no such icon on IE7 - I have this PC setup for my father and try to keep things as simple as possible. Quote
RandyL Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Hi Quacker; Right click an empty area of the command bar formerly known as the toolbar. Go to Customize Command Bar>Add or Remove Commands. Quacker Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 Hi again fellas - I never did get this sorted out and now need to have a serious attempt as this PC and my Dad especially is missing out on so much as everyone and everything points to You Tube links:mad: I might repeat the clean up I have just been helped with on another thread and then have another go at this one. To pick it up where we left, do I need to remove and re-install Java (I've never done this by the way) Is it safe to remove Java first and then follow Wolfeymole's link? I'm determined to get this working and break the cycle of buying a new PC everytime there's a problem - must have cost a small fortune over the years:( Quote

Quacker Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 Ok done that. Now have the latest Java. Right here is exactly what happens. Log onto youtube.com and do a search then click to play (Abba's Mamma Mia if you're wondering). Message says "Hello you either have Java Script turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player" I follow the link to install Adobe Flash Player 9.0.124.0 I'm then asked to install the following Active X Control "Adobe Flash Player" from Adobe systems. I then click the yellow box at the top of screen to allow Active X and begin the download. After a few seconds or so the message "failed to install - for details go to www.adobe.com/go/tn_19166. Am I missing something obvious? - Is Java Script turned off as I never knew it was switchable. Phew! Fill your boots guys. Steve Quote
Seth Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I suspect that the problem is being caused by security software or malware. Run it through this process: Required Cleanup Steps Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean. For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below. From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range" click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware.http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/printer-selection.gif__________________________________________________ STEP 1 Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed) Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode" On the left hand side, Click on Tools Then click on the Resident Icon in the List Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts. Restart your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 2 Follow these instructions carefully. Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove un-needed temporary files from your computer that may contain malware. You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main. For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored Then click on "Empty Selected". http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner01.gif . http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner02.gif__________________________________________________ STEP 3 Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files. You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next. You can leave the automated check for updates on. You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information. DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button. Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives. Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so. __________________________________________________ STEP 4 Install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes - (direct download) Accept all defaults for the installer Allow the program to update the definitions Click on the Quick Scan and click Next. If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 5 Run an online scan with ESET from Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan. If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you must first start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select "Run as administrator" from the popup context menu. Accept the terms and click "Start". Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications". Click "Start" to begin the scan. When completed restart your computer __________________________________________________ Make sure your internet firewall security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted. If required this is the download link for TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Unless instructed to by the Technician helping you then do not download this tool. Once you and the Technician agree that your system appears to be clean then you should delete all your System Restore points and recreate a new one. Quacker Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 Lol :) I have just done that today on my own PC. I will save it until tomorrow for the my dad's. I planned on doing it anyway as it seems a good bit of general mainentance - I saved the printout for future use. This has become my holy grail - to get dad onto You Tube:cool: Thanks again gang - I'll report back here tomorrow - presumably once all of that is done I should just try and log onto youtube.com? Quacker Posted June 5, 2008 Author Posted June 5, 2008 I'm trying to do the 5 step thing on my dad's computer - it seems to be taking forever! - I can only assume it is because he has thousands of extra files (digital photographs) so more to scan and get through. Either that or his machine is in a lot worse state than mine was! Another beautiful day spent stuck inside.... technology eh;) Quote

Quacker Posted June 5, 2008 Author Posted June 5, 2008 At long last I have managed to get through it. Do I need to do the hijack this thing? - the clearup found thousands of problems - then again I expected that. Tragically exactly the same message and problem with you tube - It's becoming an obsession - any ideas folks? - see my post yesterday for an exact breakdown and readout. Note: - I can't tell if it is running any faster as I seldom use this machine. I did note that it looked like bits of AVG are still hanging around although uninstalled (I think). Also as per my own PC I am scared to remove restore points and set a new one for today as not sure how safe/stable it is yet:o Steve Quote

I doubt that was the cause but he did send me this link from youtube. Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player. See if anything there can help such as uninstalling flash first. One of the links might be dead but the advice might help. Quote We are all members helping other members.
