Quacker Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 Ok - back downstairs again - flitting from one PC to the other like aa bumble bee lol. Firstly I checked the updates were up to date as my father probably ignored such stuff!! It seems windows service pack 3 is available but I'll wait on that one as it is supposed to have a few problems of its own? - I'll try the suggested youtube stuff. Randy, I have followed that youtube link and it is most infuriating to me - hence my arrival here:) Maynard, I'll look into the K-Lite Codec thing - something I was unaware of:eek: Quote
maynardvdm Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I see this pc is running IE 6 You can upgrade to IE 7 and see how that is. Quacker Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 :( Is swearing allowed on this forum? - I've added the K-Lite Codec pack but to no avail. I have tried changing the settings in IE6 - easier said that done! there are more than one Active Scripting items so I enabled more than one hoping this may help. I even removed the existing flash player to install afresh. Nothing - still the same error as mentioned. Silly question time here. What exactly am I meant to be loading? - is it adobe flash player (latest edition) Adobe Flash Player version 9.0.124.0 If so why is IE stopping the active x control and not allowing the download, then when I allow it I get the error message as prev posted. Is there any way the Java is switched off? Is there anyway I can clone/copy the pc's as one works and the other doesn't - both on IE6 as I don't believe IE7 will improve things to be honest - i mean this problem was prevalant before IE7 came along. Do you guys think the problem is with the Tools internet options & security part as I can only think that is where the difference(s) may lie, though I don't know how or why as both have remained largely untouched. I'll let it settle for a while - I need calm ;) Quote

Guest Wolfeymole Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 What didn't you upgrade to IE 7 Steve? Quote
Goku Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 (edited) A foolish question but do you have any ad-blocking software? If so then disable it, reinstall the Adobe Flash Player using the stand alone version from here or here. Then try and check if you can watch videos on YouTube or not? Source If you need a set of step-by-step instructions for configuring and tweaking the appropriate settings, then you might find something interesting here. Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player. Hope that helps. Good Luck. :) -- Goku Edited June 6, 2008 by Goku Quote

Quacker Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 Have a look at this: How to enable JavaScript in a Web browser What didn't you upgrade to IE 7 Steve? I did mate but then removed it because I couldn't locate the icon for mail - we always click on the mail symbol - I've since learned (on here) that it can be added via the tools & options:o Apologies for not answering immediately guys. I spent the weekend with the other half as was spending an unhealthy amount of time on here:eek: Quote

Goku Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Tried that as well Goku - it seems as though there's a fundamental problem preventing access or even preventing active x or adobe flash player being downloaded:( But have you tried installing using the standalone version of Adobe Flash player? The plugin might not work due to various reasons but try installing it manually if you have to. If you have already tried it then say so in your next post. :) -- Goku Quote
Quacker Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 Hi Goku - I have managed to download it from your link - so that's a start. Not sure if any further forward in that when I connect to youtube, it still gives the same message. Now I have obviously downloaded the latest flash player, so that can be eliminated surely? I ask the question again as before. Is Java Script turned off? - can it be turned off? how can I tell? - how can I turn it back on?. lol. possibly halfway there - fingers crossed. As an aside (now on the pC my dad uses) I fitted Avast to this - when I switched on, Norton was scanning the system!!! my dad says he has no knowledge of this (he always denies pressing anything of course) I know I never downloaded it. - anyway I removed it. Steve Ok, I think that you have got a good start. I know it is not related but better remove every trace of Norton than keep astray entries of the AntiVirus. How to Uninstall Norton If you think that JavaScript has been turned off in Internet Explorer, then here is how you can re-enable it or at least enable the setting. How do I turn on JavaScript in my browser? How To Turn on Javascript Also, I think Maynard has gratefully made us a tutorial post on the same topic here. Hope that is all you need. Quacker Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 Called it a night for now - spending time flitting from upstairs to downstairs so going to have some time online on my own computer as well as play with my new toy (internet radio):D One to ponder and me to check in the morning, regarding Java, on my PC I have Java (TM6) - the latest version I believe and also J2SE Runtime version 5 update 11. Whilst on the downstairs PC there is only the former - so no J2SE Runtime dunno if that matters but thought I'd mention it. Quote
Quacker Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 Sadly, I've tried everything asked and it doesn't work. I may well have to throw the towel in on this one - or worse pay for someone to come out or take it in explain the problem and see if they can do it:( I (being a layman) just can't understand how I'm told I need the latest flash update (which I have) and Java needs to be on (which it is). I work from logic and assumed PC's did too. Their logic is much different to ours it would seem. Anyone care to comment on the importance of Java Runtime J2SE which is present on the other PC but not this one - does it matter and how do I get it? - as one final test, I'm going to check both lots of security settings to see if ANYTHING differs. Don't be disheartened Steve and don't give up. If you try, we may be able to find a solution for you. Have you tried to switch browsers? See if that works or not. There are loads to choose from: 1. Mozilla Firefox 2. Avant Browser 3. Opera 4. Flock There are many more available on the net! Just try and experiment with at least two of them and see if they work or not. Incompatible browser scripts might also cause the problem you have been facing. Let us know if you want to try further or not. Good Luck. :) -- Goku Edited June 9, 2008 by Goku Quote

Quacker Posted June 10, 2008 Author Posted June 10, 2008 It's the frustration of it all guys. The reson I am hesitant to change is because it is the PC my father uses. He hates change and can't handle it - That's why he still has IE6 - I don't know enough about Firefox - I'm told it is better, but nobody expands on that. What gets me is both computers were (more or less) set up the same - I'll keep trying and watching this space. I know there'll be a solution. God I hate youtube ;) So the search goes on lol. Seth Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Hi Steve. I've reviewed the thread. 1) Does Adobe Flash Player show up in add/remove programs? (Just wanting to confirm it's installed). 2) See if you tube works in Safe Mode With Networking. Keep tapping F8 as the computer starts to access that mode. Firefox integrates the latest security updates with a simple and effective interface so that any computer user can surf the net smoothly and safely. As I said, it is customizable and you also get a skin to make it look like Internet Explorer 6. Just explain the same points to your father and convince him to switch to it. He will absolutely love it. Please try and see if you can help this or not. Meanwhile, I will look for an alternate solution. :) -- Goku Quote

Seth Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I missed that. I really want to know if flash is installed and if the prob occurs in SMWN. He can just run FF as a test if he doesn't want to switch.
