Hi there,

This is my first (but probably not last) visit and I hope that some brainy soul can help me. I have tried various searches on here, but could not find what I was after.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop (6 yrs old) and the hard disc recently died. I have today replaced this, and having used the original Sony Recovery Discs I am now faced with a 'log on to windows' screen, with 'administrator' and a blank password box beneath it. I have no idea what password it is looking for and wondered if anyone has faced a similar problem when fitting a new disc/installing original factory settings? I apologise if this is completely brainless, but I'm really stuck.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi raykay and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

I'm not familiar with Windows 2000 but it sounds similar to XP. If no password was set then you should be able to bypass it. I can't rember off hand but it should be something as simple as proceeding without entering a password.

What options are displayed? Have you tried to logon without a password?

Hi RandyL,

Thanks for the very fast reply. I feel a bit embarassed, but your suggestion of not using a password was the right one and it took me smoothly on from there. I'm now happily upgrading back to XP and all looks good. Thanks again....I can't believe that I didn't press the 'enter' button without a password!
