Guest Dan McGarigle Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 When I open a .wav file I get a window titled "Open With" and it presents "Recommended Programs:" that has a list of four (4) programs - ATI Multimedia Center - Cool Edit 2000 - iTunes - Windows Media Player and I have to choose one of them to open a .wav file. But I want .wav files to always be opened only by Cool Edit 2000. How to I stop the "Open With" window from appearing so that only Cool Edit 2000 will always be started to open a .wav file ? Thanks ! Dan in California

If there is, check it and open with Cool Edit 2000. If not, open a folder and click the Tools menu and click Folder Options. In the dialog box that opens, click the File Types tab. Scroll down to "WAV", click on it, and click "Change". Highlight Cool Edit 2000, make sure the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box is checked, and click OK.
Guest Dan McGarigle Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Re: Don't want "Open With" window when opening .wav files I have set that option to "always use the selected program.....". But I still always get the "Open With" and its 4 "RecommendedPrograms". Now what ? Hmm...this sounds like it could be a problem in the Windows Registry. I'm no expert there, so I won't advise you about working with that since it can damage your computer if you don't know what you're doing. But perhaps this is an error that a registry cleaner program would fix. Here's one that I use and recommend: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/RegSeeker/1035382760/1. Download and run it, and in the column on the left click "Clean the Registry". In the next screen, make sure "backup before deletion" in the lower- left-hand corner is checked, and click Auto Clean. In the dialog box that opens, make sure the "select all" radio button is selected and hit Go. This is absolutely pure speculation as to the source and cure for the problem; I have no idea whether or not the registry is the source of your problem, and if it is, that a registry cleaner will fix it. But it won't do any harm (as long as you clicked "backup before deletion") -- the worst that can happen is that it doesn't fix your problem, but cleans old junk out of your registry and speeds your computer up a little.
Guest Dan McGarigle Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Re: Don't want "Open With" window when opening .wav files Thanks for your clear reply. And, RegSeeker has not helped at all. Nor has another registry cleaner, RegSupremePro. All they do is find registry entries that point to non-existant files. They don't approach the subject of logical errors in the registry. Can you refer me to some other resource at Microsoft that explains the broad view, and all the details of, the Registry ? Thanks for your contiunued replies. Here's the Microsoft Knowledge Base article about the Registry: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986/en-us. I also find that this Wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Registry, explains it well. However, I really don't know whether this is or even could be the source of the problem. Try this: Right click on a .wav file and click Properties. What does it say next to "Type of file" and "Opens with"? Press the "Change" button next to "Opens with" and select Cool Edit 2000. See if this solves the problem, though it seems unlikely, since the other methods haven't worked.
