Guest TREE65 Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I just enabled Shadow Copies for Shared Folders on our new Windows Server 2003 file server. I have discovered that open files do not get shadow copied. Furthermore, all previous shadow copies of the open files are removed. When I look at the previous versions client, there are no previous versions listed; however prior to the shadow copy that occurred while the file was open there had been previous versions listed in the previous versions client. Please note that the shadow copy occurs when the file is open and then at some point later I save and close the file, and then I check the previous versions. Is this by design? I can live with shadow copies not being made for open files, but I can't have all previous shadow copy versions removed. Please help!
Guest Coraleigh Miller Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Re: Open Files and Shadow Copies for Shared Folders Are you storing your shadow copies on the same volume that is being shadow copied? "Select a storage area on a volume that is not being shadow copied. Using a separate volume on another disk provides two advantages. First, it eliminates the possibility that high I/O load will cause shadow copies to be deleted. Second, this configuration provides better performance. This is the recommended configuration for heavily used file servers. Guest TREE65 Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Re: Open Files and Shadow Copies for Shared Folders Thanks for your suggestion. I'm storing my shadow copies on the same volume, but I did get this problem resolved today. Microsoft sent me the hotfix for KB Article Number 933653. After installing the hotfix and rebooting Shadow Copies for Shared Folders is working the way I expected it to.
