Trouble With Memory/data Stick

Hiya all, was hoping for some advice on my memory stick again. It shows up as being 16GB when i check. But though it's empty, it wont allow me to transfer a video clip which is 6.58GB. The message i get is:

"The disk in the destination drive is full.

Insert a new disk to continue."

 

Even when i had two smaller video clips on it earlier it said:

"used space 3.24GB

 

free space 12.5GB"

 

but still wouldn't allow the other one on there saying the message above about being full.

I removed the other two and did format but still the same. Any ideas or have i bought a dud memory stick...lol

I haven't run into this issue. Can you copy other types of files?

Hiya Kelly, im sure ive had more than the two clips i spoke of earlier on it....weird thing is, ive also got an 8GB memory stick and i transfered both the video clips onto that also but when empty it says not enough space for the 6.58GB video clip. All clips came from Windows media player but this particular one wont load onto either. Both memory sticks came from totally different places.

So can you copy other types of files to the drive?

 

Right click on the drive and choose Properties. What does the capacity show?

 

Change the file type to NTFS and perform a format again (not a quick format).

 

If all of the above doesn't pan out, I'd say the flash is defective.

Thanks Seth i'll try that. I did also have the problem that the video clip took about 6gb for 14 minutes of footage but got that sorted now i think. Have also had Bob and Randys help. Still doesn't explain why it wouldn't fit onto data stick to begin with though when there was plenty of space. But i will try what you suggest. Many thanks

If the memory stick was formatted to FAT32 then it does not support files sizes over 4GB you would need NTFS

Hiya Advancedsetup, why do both my 8gb and 16gb data sticks show up the right amount of space on them in properties and can it be altered from FAT32?

FAT32 allows the proper drive size for formatting, the issue I thought you were describing was that you have a single file that is over 4GB in size. If that is the case then FAT32 does not support writing a single file larger than 4GB however NTFS does.

 

NTFS on some drives will be slower at writing than FAT32 but it allows SECURITY and single files in excess of 4GB.

 

 

Well in THEORY you need to do this, but it does not work on all systems and all USB drives.

 

Go to Device Manager and set the policy of the USB Stick device to "Optimize for Performance". The default is to optimize for Quick Removal, which restricts you to the FAT and FAT32 filesystem.

 

Restart the computer and then see if the FORMAT option allows NTFS as an option

If not then you should be able to manually do it like this.

 

Click on START-RUN and type in CMD

This will put you in a DOS Prompt box where you can manually format the disk to NTFS

 

Type the following and then press the ENTER key.

FORMAT E: /FS:NTFS /V:MyUSB /X

 

WARNING!! Make sure you select the correct DRIVER LETTER of your USB drive or you will be formatting the wrong drive and lose all your data.

 

Change E: to the drive letter assigned to your USB thumb drive

/V is what LABEL name you want

/X simply tells it to dismount the drive if it needs to in order to format it.

 

Warning!! Using NTFS with optimize for Quick Removal enabled can lead to data corruption

depending on how the drive is used. In most cases it should be fine, but you need to give the drive time to flush cache before removing. It would be best to use the Safely Remove USB device button in the Task Tray.

Thanks for that Advancedsetup.....may give that a go oneday.....lol

I do appreciate your help and advice but think i'll be leaving that one for awhile as i just thought it was a matter of if it says a certain size, then thats what you get. Not like you get told that when you buy these data sticks. They were brought as a back up purpose and to use as a convenience if i were at someone elses place. I guess i will use them as they are for the time being. Thanks all the same.
