Pavilion dv9000 Shutdown and Other Problems

Alright, once again throwing out some questions for the experts.

 

First and primarily worst, is that when the computer is shutdown or restarted, it will not restart. Not even post. It will turn on, fans will start going, then shut down and repeat ad infinitum. However, taking the battery out and putting it back in will let it boot up normally.

 

Secondly, as far as I can tell, is that the wireless networking causes the display to become garbled with colourful lines, and the entire system locks up to where it needs a hard shutdown.

 

Any suggestions, please?

 

Update: Just updated the BIOS. Things so far, so good.

So it sounds like you got the laptop back up and running again by doing a Firmware update?

According to what JEB read... HP has had trouble with the wireless cards and have thus extended warrenties on them by two years. If the problem continues.... we may contact HP.

 

Also... the bios update seemed to help in that the cooling fan and the wireless run on similar frequencies. The update changed that just enough to help.

 

My question is... even though all seems to be working ok (for now) .... would a faulty wireless card cause the start up, shut down, start up, shut down that JEB described? My thinking is that the card activates on boot up, but doesn't fully connect to the network until boot up is complete. If the card is sort of faulty would that prevent the computer from booting?

Any defective device has the potential to cause such issues. For example, yesterday I repaired a computer in which the video card was defective and not allowing the computer to post. Admittedly however, it would be rare for a wireless card to do so.

 

If it happens again, uninstall the wireless card and reinstall the latest driver. If that didn't work and the lappy wasn't under warranty, I would temporarily remove the card.

Flashing the BIOS seems to make the wireless like living again. It still does the on/off/on/off/on/off on a restart, but it will now come out of hibernation, and usually starts properly after a total shutdown.

And... we're back to square one, though it's only crashed once thusfar. :(

Have you uninstalled the wireless card then installed the latest driver? Some might not have a full new driver version, but rather just a driver update.

I ran through HP's lovely process of updating very recently. In general, it's been working well, but the crash this morning kinda irritated the stuff outta me.

You seem to have two problems with the lappy:

 

1) A no post which means a hardware failure.

 

2) The garbled display when online using the wireless.

 

Is that correct?

Well.... yes and no Seth. According to the HP rep... and JEB... JEB was able to get into the bios and start up... which means it was posting. And so far the non-destructive system restore seems to have helped.

 

Also we have been running ethernet instead of wireless now.

 

But who knows what tomorrow will bring.

 

And from what I've read... people with the HP6000 and 9000 series have had nothing but problems with them. I'm not sure I want another HP computer. :p

So the laptop won't boot again.... tried F8.... nothing... continually start up shut down.... start up... shut down... not even the faint glow of a backlight on the computer screen. Unplugged it... removed the battery.... put the battery back... plugged it in... turned it on.... tapped F10... finally got the laptop to boot. Full desktop and all. We contacted HP and we are sending it back. If it's the motherboard/video card... we should be ok and they will repair it because they have extended the warrenty. If it's something else... well... I guess we're S.O.L. (sorry, outta luck ;) ) depending on how much it will cost to repair.

Having the same problem with my hp dv2036 laptop, its off for repair today.

 

Have you had yours returned yet?
