How to analyze a malfunction

Recommended Posts

I am unable to capture a screen image using the PrtSc key, nor am I able to

capture the contents of an active window using Alt PrtSc key combination.

By capture I mean I ran clipBrk.exe immediately after PrtSc and it was empty.

Perhaps some graphics application has taken over these features. How can I

determine exactly what happens when I press PrtSc.

KCav,

For XP:

Capture the current focused window is CTRL + PRINTSCREEN. ALT is for Windows

2000 & before

Can you capture with the correct keys?

Re: How to analyze a malfunction

No, I pressed Ctrl PrtSc, opened WordPad and tried to Paste. Next I Ran

Clipbrd.exe and it was empty.

Ctrl PrtSc, PrtSc, Alt PrtSc all faile to capture anyting.

How can I log what files are being opened. I think the commands are being

interecepted by some program.

Er No. Alt+PrintScrn is the correct key combination for XP. I have just

tried it and verified it on 2 PCs. Ctrl+PrintScrn has the same effect as

PrintScrn on its own.

Re: How to analyze a malfunction

if i am not mistaken

clipbook is a service that

can be enabled or disabled

in services via admin tools.

notwithstanding, you may

be actually capturing the

screen and not realize it.

the captured screen should

be seen when you click "paste"

in a program like paint:

start > run > %SystemRoot%\system32\mspaint.exe

generally, pressing the

print screen key or in

combination with the shift

key will capture the image.

I went to Services and found the status of Clipbrd is Started. I peformed

Alt + PrtSc and looked in clipbrd, nothing there.

I wonder why the key board cammand Alt PrtSc is not capturing anything. I

will bet some program is interferring. How can I capture to a log file the

files that are accessed when I try to capture either the active window or

entire screen with a print screen command?

That is *not* correct. Alt-PrtScrn is the correct combination for the active

Window, and Ctrl-PrtScrn works just like PrtScrn alone.

To KCav: What happens when you press PrtScrn or Alt-PrtScrn, then open Paint

and Press Ctrl-V (paste)?

Re: How to analyze a malfunction

not sure. however, it

takes memory to be available

for reserving the image.

also, eventhough the clipbook/board

service is enabled, i think you still

need to run the exe program - but

i don't remember anymore.

on my system i can simply

press "the" print screen button

and paste it into word or

paint.

what you might want

to try is to download a

freeware on print screens

or clipboards, there are dozens

of them available.

if a freeware seems to work

for you whereas the windows

standard print screen does

not, then this could be

a clue to look further into

your problem, that is if you

still want to spend time

figuring it out.

i suppose what also

comes to mind is that

your keyboard button

may be faulty as well.

windows has an onscreen keyboard

via the accessibility options.

you can use your mouse, hover

over the visual print screen button

then click it.

afterwards alt tab to wordpad and

see if this captured your screen.

you may also want to

see if the above option

will work in your safemode.

let us know what you

find out with the

above.....

Re: How to analyze a malfunction

Thank you for your reply.

I performed a PrtSc using Windows on screen keyborad. I presees the PrtSc

key and pasted the the entire screen image into WordPad. This mean I have

memory available and Windows services work. I would like to capture the what

happens when I press the PrtSc ke on my keyboard. Any idea on how to do that?

I did try to kind a third party remedy. I went to Goolgel and entered

PrtKey and then I downloaded Prevx 2.0. It eneded up a Spy detector. So

where do I find a PrtSc remedy?

Remove the keyboard from Device Manager, then restart. This should

reinstall the KB driver and that key might start working.

Sounds like the PrtSc key on the keyboard itself isn't working, try a

different keyboard for verification.

Re: How to analyze a malfunction

well, it is unlikely that

a third party program,

as i had suggested will

do any better because they

require a keyboard

as well.

i think your discoveries

have provided you with

some useful information

with analyzing this issue.

basically, what you have

discovered is that the malfunction

seems to be a hardware issue,

involving your keyboard.

keyboard issues are not

uncommon at all. could

be something physical that

is interfering underneath

the cap of that key,

could be a corrupted keyboard

driver, etc...

in the interim, if you can't get

the keyboard functioning or replaced,

simply use your onscreen keyboard

for your print screen function.

consider the microsoft's onscreen keyboard a

better alternative than a third party

software....

let us know what you discover

and or do...

What are you talking about? I still use ALT + PRINT SCREEN to capture

an active window on Windows XP Pro SP2! I press the keys, and the open

Paint or another editing program and I paste. it works fine.

Re: How to analyze a malfunction

Work Around

I put a short-cut to Electronic Keyboard in my Administrative Tools menu so

I can access the Electronic Keyboard by clicking on Start and pointing to

Administrative Tools | Elecrtonic Keyboard.

I capture the entire screen into memory by clickig on the PrtSc key on the

Electronic Keyboard; open Photoshop and paste the image into a new file so I

can crop it to remove the keyboard; save it in JPG format at minimum

resolution.

I open Word, insert the picture, add my comments and questions, and save it

as a document file.

The procedure works. It would be nice to automate it with a script file that

pauses to allow capture and cropping.

Re: How to analyze a malfunction

WORK AROUND

This procedure enables me to capture a screen image on a notebook computer

where the PrtSc key does not work

• Placed a short-cut to Electronic Keyboard in Admin Tools where it can be

accessed by clicking on Start and pointing to Admin Tools | Electronic

Keyboard.

• Captured screen to memory by clicking on the PrtSc key in the Electronic

Keyboard

• Saved imaged to Photoshop; cropped image to remove Electronic Keyboard;

saved as JPG in min. resolution.

• Inserted picture into Word, added comments and questions; saved as

document file.

This procedure works. It would be nice to replace the short-cut with a

script file.

The script file would pause to allow capture, save, and insert operations.

Could someone help me write the script file.

Keyboard

• Saved imaged to Photoshop; cropped image to remove Electronic Keyboard;

saved as JPG in min. resolution.

• Inserted picture into Word, added comments and questions; saved as

document file.

It would be nice to replace the short-cut with a script file that paused to

allow capture, save, and insert operations.

Could someone help me write the script file.

Re: How to analyze a malfunction

Good Morning Ken,

I tried to make the following post, but I don't see it; if duplicated, I

appoligize.

This procedure enabled me to capture a screen image on a notebook computer

where the PrtSc key does not work

• Placed a short-cut to Electronic Keyboard in Admin Tools where it can be

accessed by clicking on Start and pointing to Admin Tools | Electronic

Keyboard.

• Captured screen to memory by clicking on the PrtSc key in the Electronic

Keyboard

• Saved imaged to Photoshop; cropped image to remove Electronic Keyboard;

saved as JPG in min. resolution.

• Inserted picture into Word, added comments and questions; saved as

document file.

It would be nice to replace the short-cut with a script file that pauses to

allow capture, save, and insert operations.

Could someone help me write the script file?

Re: How to analyze a malfunction

yeh, that's a good idea &

work around.

incidentally, after i gave

it a bit more thought, I

think that a third party

screen printer, would

be a reasonable idea

after all.

i had forgotten that most of them

provide the option to pre program

key combinations on your keyboard

and you won't need to use the prtscn

key.

also the freeware will likely function

in a minimized state, so there

wont be any cutting or cropping

your images.

i gave you a link that can

be beneficial for shopping

around for them...

glad you have figured

out this malfunction.
