The problem is a painfully slow operation and we have had an stop error code with blue screen on start up. I managed to boot it with the operating cd and the chkdsk / found one or more problems on the hard drive. There must be something else going on somewhere, maybe you can find it from the log and tell me what to do.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter.

The log is clean.

See if the computer is slow in Safe Mode With Networking:

As soon as you turn on the computer, keep tapping F8 which will get you to a boot menu. Use the arrow keys to navigate to Safe Mode With Networking and press enter.

Thanks Seth,

Yes it does definately work a lot faster in safe mode. I used safe mode with networking as you advised but it wont connect to internet. All the icons are there on what is now a black screen with safe mode worded in each corner. Awaiting your instruction Seth. Thanks,

Peter

Since it's fine in Safe Mode, then it's likely one of the following programs that start in Normal Mode is the cause of the slowdown. The following are the programs that automatically start when XP starts (most are needless and often cause system degradation and/or conflicts)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dla] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iSUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4oD] "C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KHost.exe" -all

Go to Start>Run, type in msconfig and click "OK". Put a check on Selective Startup and click on the "Startup Tab". Scroll through the list and uncheck everything except for the Intel Wireless and the Avast entries. Click Apply>OK, and restart the computer when prompted. Any better now?

BTW-Did this computer ever have Norton on it?

Hi Seth,

That is much faster other than the initial home page starting up. Once the home page is up and running all the other sites such as Google etc., load much faster. It is always a problem with slow page turning with this computer if you know what I mean, but it is faster now. It never did have Norton installed, but it did have the trial run of McAfee for about three months when we first bought the laptop about 4 years ago. Its a Dell Inspiron 6000 and it's been very reliable untill this slow page turning thing happened etc. Thanks again Seth, do you think there is anything else we can do,

Peter

You're most welcome.

"Home" pages such as msn or yahoo are constantly being updated with the latest "news", graphics...advertising, etc. Don't even get me started on that, lol. As such, you may experience delays in such home pages opening.

Change your home page to Google and see what happens.
