Guest JohnBoy25 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I was advised by a friend that if I uninstall XP Service Pack 2 then reinstall it, that could solve the problems I am having with validation. I told him that I cannot acces Microsoft Update, Windows Update (still, despite all the advice I have been given)and my PC did not come with a disk but he said that didn't matter. Now I am stuck with Internet explorer 6, service pack 1 and am unable to download SP2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I did download Service Pack 2 eventually but it said it couldn't complete the installation. No explenation given so I have no indication of why it failed. Memory space is not a problem either. Without SP2, there isn't a lot I can do. Forgot to mention that I have Home Edition. Unless I'm doing something wrong but given the instructions, my understanding is that it's there as an option. I don't really understand the resolution section on that page. The first two steps are easy enough, but it's step 3: On the Edit DWORD Value window, click to select Hexadecimal on the Base pane that I don't understand. There is no 'Hexadecimal' option. You are referring to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906485/ "How to enable verbose logging on a Windows XP-based computer" If you are able to navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup in regedit, then you will see ten keys in the main window on the right. The sixth key down should be called LogLevel. If you double-click it, in the right-hand side you will see a small window ("pane") called Base. Underneath that there are two radio buttons: Hexadecimal and Decimal. Make sure Hexadecimal is selected (it probably already is). Then, to the left, you will see Value data. Enter 0000FFFF in the Value data box. But if the above is too difficult, I would suggest that you shouldn't be altering the registry in the first place. I would find someone else to do it.
