Upgrade RAM from 2GB to 4GB

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've added another 2GB to my system (K8Upgrade-VM800 Motherboard) but only

2GB is recognised.

The new 2GB is recognised when I look at my BIOS, but XP is stuck on RAM of

2048MB.

I've tried MAXMEM in Boot.ini, but that won't go any higher than 2048.

What am I doing wrong?

Your bios might not be configured to see more than 2gb. I can't remember

exactly what the setting was but it something with remapping the memory.

Yeh, I've tried all the bios settings, but there's nothing remotely similar

to 'Remapping' or anything to do with memory. It just states the 2 x slots

and that there's RAM of 2048 in each.

UNcheck MAXMEM, don't put anything in it.

Re: Upgrade RAM from 2GB to 4GB

It was unchecked when I first went into Boot.ini. So I checked it and tried

to change the setting to 4096. But it wouldn't let me - it always went back

to 2048.

So I left it unchecked again.

Where do you see the 2MB number being recognized?

I don't know why you're only seeing 2MB, but I'll point out that you'll

never see all 4MB. The maximum is around 3.1GB. That's because all 32-bit

versions of Windows have to share their 4GB address space with memory used

for hardware like your graphics card.

Yes, I'm aware of the 3.1GB. But I don't get that high!

I see '2GB of RAM' displayed when I right click on 'My Computer' and go to

properties.

Your new ram is NOT compatible with your old ram. Take out the old ram.

What on earth are you doing that requires so much memory? There is not

usually much advantage to be gained by giving XP more than 1 GB of memory.

Exceptions are heavy duty applications such as editing high definition

video, but even then 2 GB is as much as you need. Going much beyond that

gives little advantage, not least because of limitations in XP.

Re: Upgrade RAM from 2GB to 4GB

My pc has slowed down so much. I run e-learning development software,

graphics software, etc - in addition to normal office applications.

Just launching a programme now takes a couple of minutes!

That's why I thought extra RAM would do the trick.

Any other suggestions?

You need a lot more than extra RAM.

Ah, so the real problem is slowdown, not insufficient RAM.

Yes, that's right. Programmes and everything takes far too long. When I

print something, the whole system freezes.

FGGH:

It really would help if you would provide specific details as to your

system, e.g., the make/model of your motherboard, your processor, your video

card, your hard drive(s), what kind of system you're running (RAID?), and

any other details re the PC components and programs you're running, etc.,

etc., so that you could get some intelligent & meaningful responses &

suggestions to your query.

When you add comments like "When I print something, the whole system

freezes.", it seems apparent your problem(s) involve much more than adding

RAM. Again, detail the problem(s) you're running into - be as specific as

you can.

Thanks Doug. Now I'm getting somewhere.

Don't know why AGP is disabled. What is it? How do I get to it?

And what progs do you think are the problem?

Spyware doctor could be your problem. If you let it do automatic scans

it will bring your whole computer to a dead stop.

The best thing to do when your computer is crawling is to open Windows

Task Manager click on the Process tab and in the CPU column see what is

eating up your processor. then you can right click on it and click on

end process. See how that improves things. If it works either get rid of

that program or reset the settings for it.

Sometimes a programs auto update will do the same thing. That is why I

always manually update.

I also notice that you have Adobe Reader8 on your computer. I got rid of

it as foxit reader does just as well and I had the same problem that

you described. I went into Task manager and Adobe Readers update was

using 100% of my cpu. got rid of it and no problems. I have almost as

many programs running as you do ( I know because my son complains) but

my computer zips along with 1gig of ram. Its not so much how many

progams, although it can be a problem, but which programs and what you

are letting them do.

Hi: Adobe Ver 8 is a bad actor. If I use the damned thing, it

will try and download the update and use up my bandwidth as I am

on dial-up. I DON'T want the update unless it is on my

initiative. I have discontinued the sneaky download three times

already. I can't seem to be able to head it off and have tried

mightily.
