Guest BB Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 My children (bless 'em) have installed and uninstalled a Command and Conquerer game. Now I can't get my cdrom and dvdwriter to work. Device Manager sees them with a yellow exclamation mark attached. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall drivers but it does not help. The optical drives are not shown in 'my computer'. I can't repair XP with the original disk because the drives don't work properly! Please help. Regards Bob
Guest Ron Badour Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Re: optical drives cd dvd fail to operate - securom? Boot in safe mode, go to device manager and delete all entries pertaining to the two drives. Reboot in normal mode and let Windows detect them. -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP 1997 - 2007 "BB" <BB@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:DB8B2B44-D74F-4E07-84CC-23A6E00E1142@microsoft.com... > My children (bless 'em) have installed and uninstalled a Command and > Conquerer game. Guest BB Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Re: optical drives cd dvd fail to operate - securom? Hi Ron Thanks for your very quick response. Unfortunately the fix has not worked. I rebooted in safe mode, uninstalled both optical drives in Device Manager and then restarted in normal mode. The same problem persists. Both drives show in Device Manager with yellow exclamation icons. Neither drive is shown in 'My Computer' Neither drive auto starts with a cd in it although the active light on each does flash for a while. I am comfortable ferreting about in the registry if there is something there that I need to remove. Any further advice please? Guest BB Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Re: optical drives cd dvd fail to operate - securom? I have some more info. I tried to update drivers whilst in Safe Mode. An error was reported that said entries in the registry were damaged or missing (Code 19). The driver files that are listed for each drive under Driver Details are: cdrom.sys imapi.sys redbook.sys storprop.dll Does any of the above help your diagnosis? Guest Ron Badour Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Re: optical drives cd dvd fail to operate - securom? Great Bob. I would have suggested that article as the next step--I had to use it to fix my wife's PC a couple of months ago. Deleting the drives is usually the first recommended step as oftentimes it will right things. Sorry I did not get back to you earlier but alls well that ends well :-) -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP 1997 - 2007 "BB" <BB@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:89F81C18-A3F0-4C5E-B42A-64EE6BFE7F39@microsoft.com... > Cracked it! > > I ran the Guided Help utility to be found at: > > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 > > I have my drives back! > > Thanks for your time and Kind Regards > Bob > > "Ron Badour" wrote: > >> Boot in safe mode, go to device manager and delete all entries pertaining >> to >> the two drives. Guest BB Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Re: optical drives cd dvd fail to operate - securom? Hi Ron I also found out how to get rid of SecuROM which I believe casued the problem in the first place. I include the fix here for others that may follow this post. QUOTE Please be informed that these files in your UserData folder are used to store licence information for SecuROM protected applications. They were created at the first execution of the protected program. Any manipulation in this folder may cause the SecuROM application to work different than expected. These files are not executables themselves and therefore can't affect your system in any way. Nevertheless if you want to delete the folder please follow the instructions below: 1) Open the command line by pressing "Start" and selecting the "Run..." option. 2) Type "cmd" (without "s) and push the [Enter] button on the keyboard. 3) Please type in the following command: rd /s "%APPDATA%\SecuROM" and press [Enter] on the keyboard. 4) Answer Y to the Y/N question and press [Enter] to complete the process. The folder should now be deleted. Please understand that any SecuROM application that uses UserData will rebuild these files and folder with future launches. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
