Why shortcut error message?

Recommended Posts

Guest speedy_mike

When I click on one of my desktop shortcuts I get an error message that is

attached. Interestingly, right after I get the error message, the

appropriate screen comes up and I can do business normally.

So why am I getting the error message and what can I do to stop it? I'm

running Windows XP Pro with SP2.

Thanks much for your help.

What does the error message say exactly? We'll need more information to help

you out with preventing the issue. If you give this information I'll do my

best to help you out :-)

Re: Why shortcut error message?

sorry, I was in the web-based newsgroup and didn't see the attachment. Go to

control panel > folder options and click on the file types tab. Double check

the information under extension [NONE] for the file type Internet Shortcut,

extension [NONE] for the URL File types, and also extension HTM and HTML by

clicking on the file type and clicking the advanced button. Click on Open

and then click the edit button. As an easy way you can fix it if nothing

looks off is to uncheck the option to "Use DDE" Best of luck :-)

Although some people might do so, many of us (including me) won't open an

attachment from a stranger in a newsgroup. Depending on what software they

are using, they may not even have the choice to open it.

Please post your error message in the body of the message.

Thanks for the information, kenkcj.

Now, you've got me curious. What is the web-based newsgroup? How can I

see/use it? Do I want to use it? Just curious about it.

Thanks very much, again.

Re: Why shortcut error message?

I've been on vacation and am getting back to this.

I got into the folder options and checked both HTM and HTML. DDE was

checked on both of them so I unchecked DDE on both. But, as soon as I

closed the window, they changed back. I've unchecked the DDE a number of

times and haven't seen any <apply> type options to keep them unchecked.

I'm not sure what I should be seing under the extension [NONE] and what to

change when I find it.

A little more help would be appreciated.

Thanks very much for your help and time.

Try the HTM/HTML Associations fix plus the URL File Association Fix

available here:

Fix File Associations.

Re: Why shortcut error message?

Mike,

For the extensions under [NONE] you should be looking under the File Types

column for entries that say URL: HyperText Transfer Protocol, URL: HyperText

Transfer Protocol with Privacy, and also Internet Shortcut. Make sure to

uncheck DDE for these as well if Elmo's link doesn't help you out. Best of

luck.

Re: Why shortcut error message?

Thanks for the suggestion, Joe. I appreciate your help.

But, this time the error message that popped up says, "Windows cannot find

[file name]. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To

search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

I'm still having a problem. I'd appreciate any more suggestions!

Thanks,

Re: Why shortcut error message?

Ahhhh. It works. Thanks much Ken. I didn't realize HTML showed up in the

[NONE] group, I guess. Also, when I go to the Folder Options screen, click

on (for example) URL.HyperText Transfer Protocol -> Advanced -> Edit, then

the box "Use DDE" is checked. If I uncheck it and "OK" out of all the

windowns (no "Apply" is available), then get back to the same spot, the "Use

DDE" box is checked, again. Go figgure!

Thanks much for your clarification, Ken.

And thank you Elmo for your suggestions.

Re: Why shortcut error message?

This worked great .... for a while. I began getting the same error message,

again, and went back into the file types tab. I changed URL: HyperText

Transfer Protocol with Privacy and Internet Shortcut by unchecking the DDE

block. They had the DDE block checked, again.

But now there's no URL: HyperText Transfer Protocol file type. How can I

recover it?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Re: Why shortcut error message?

Go back to control panel > folder options > File types tab. Click under new

and hit the advanced button that pops up. In the extension put (NONE) and

under associated file types, scroll to URL: HyperText Transfer Protocol.
