Guest David Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 I reformatted/reinstalled WinXP Pro -- after system started freezing on shutdown. After re-installing WInXP Pro and motherboard software(no other software)- the system shutdown normally. Next, I downloaded the windows updates - and the system starting taking nearly 2 minutes to shutdown (tested several times). Then after adding some programs, the system now takes well over 3 minutes to shutdown -- always hanging on "Saving your Settings". I've searched Microsoft and Googled galore -- but still remain confused as to the cause. I did check my drivers (through device manager) and the system was working fine on initial re-installation. Any ideas would be appreciated. Dave

Have you seen the Windows XP Shutdown Troubleshooter at: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php Scroll down to SHUTDOWN HANGS ON "SAVING YOUR SETTINGS"

I did "assume" that the patch was already downloaded as I have downloaded all "recommended" patches. I probably should go back in and verify that it was there. 2. I also tried the alternative idea of removing the log-on Welcome screen -- but it didn't help... Thanks for your response Dave

If your hang goes away, it's probably one of those. And since you recently reinstalled the OS, you might as well start from scratch. Make sure you have all your drivers and app installation files as well as the SP2 disk (which also contains everything from SP1) and follow the directions at: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html Then install SP2 in Safe Mode while offline. Then, reboot and reconnect and download/install all the other hotfixes post-SP2.
