Can't Sign In To Messenger

Hiya all, for no apparant reason i can no longer sign in to msn messenger or my hotmail email account. It gives error message:

 

Windows live messenger could not sign you in because windows live ID you entered does not

exist or is incorrect.

 

Error code: 80048823

 

This seems to have happened for no reason as i was using it earlier and have not changed anything. I unistalled all live messenger stuff from add/remove and reinstalled it again but still the same error message and still no access.

I did think maybe msn was playing up but this has been for hours now and just wondered if anyone has any solutions or suggestions. Many thanks.

Hi ONY;

It could be a lot of reasons including MSN is having problems. But try a couple things first.

 

Make sure your cap lock isn't on if you are typing your password.

Make sure your date and time is set right.

Delete ALL temporary internet files.

 

See if hat helps. If not we'll move on.

Hiya Randy and thanks for the quick reply. Have already done all you suggested and also done all the scans....atf, eset, superantispyware and malwarebytes but shows up no problems.

OK. Let's check your Live registration. Go here http://account.live.com/ and click Sign in with a different account. Enter your ID and password that you use with hotmail and messenger.

Just went there Randy but didn't give me option of signing in with different account so i used my same details and error message said:

 

You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect e-mail address or password.

 

The thing is when i try to bring up messenger my email address is already there.

Also just tried via Tnternet explorer, tried signing in with different account but gave this message:

 

 

Sign in failed. You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect e-mail address or password, or someone else is trying to sign in to the account

The option to sign in with a different account is there. I think it's blue. Look carefully right below where you entered your information.

 

Once there enter your ID and password.

 

If your account is locked because of multiple sign in attempts you should be presented with a sequence of characters. Enter the characters and then click Sign in to unlock your account.

I did enter the sequence of characters but still got the same message. Even when i go to microsoft site i can't find any info on the error code i keep getting:

Try resetting your password. Go back to the link and Sign in with a different account again.

 

Enter your ID but not your password. Instead click Forgot password. Follow the wizard to reset your password. If that works do the following.

 

Open messenger but do not sign in. Click Forget Me then click Yes.

 

Type your email address and password. Select to Remember Me and Remember my password. Sign in.

 

If you get the error again check to see if the account has been locked again.

Im off to grab a few hours sleep Randy and will shut computer down and see if its any different tomorrow. Will keep you updated but been on this computer all day and need some sleep.

Just read your reply and thought id reply back before i head off to sleep.

Did all you said in last post but still the same. So sorry to be a pain but it's baffling me, but sleep calls and so i will read any updates on my thread in a few hours. Thanks again.

Usually, when you get a "tried to sign in too many times" error, you're going to have to wait a period of time - from my experiences, about 24 hours or so - before trying again. So give it a day or two, then go to the Live Messenger site and try clicking the "Forgot my password" link.

JEB is probably right. At this point it's probably best to just sit and wait for a while without trying to sign in. Then repeat the steps as he suggested. Too many failed tries in a time period will get you locked out for a while.

 

If after waiting for 24 to 48 hours and you still experience a problem signing in after doing that then there might be more going on.

 

You might need to re-register certain files or edit the registry. Normally this would not be needed unless your system is infected or was infected in the past.

 

Possible causes of infection are dubious programs such as P2P, Screensavers or certain free games or other software.

 

Do you have all of the Windows updates? Do you have antivirus and antispyware installed and updated?

 

If you suspect any of the above issues then follow the previously mentioned advice or follow our malware removal guide.

Hi Ron.

 

Good links. I think those steps have been tried though. That's why I suspect more is going on. If after what JEB said to do is wait and the steps provided fail then malware and programs that install it should be considered.

 

If malware is the cause by chance then damage control may be needed even after a clean up. I hope that's not the case as files may need to be re-registered and the registry might need to be changed manually. Never by a registry cleaner though.

Hiya all and many thanks for your help and suggestions but ive tried all those things and still the same. Even when it says send password reminder to email address or alternative, this does not help because it wont do anything. It say check your junk mail folder if not in inbox but i cant access my email account to check. Im at a loss. Messenger and email work ok with someone elses address but not my own. So have no way of getting to any of my mail or access via messenger. Any ideas?

Well if what Randy is thinking is true then you really should run the Malware cleanup routine as posted in another thread for you or your mom.

 

If it's found then you will need to do some damage control with your banking, and other online ventures to ensure they have not become compromised.

Hiya Advancedsetup, ive done all the scans in previous post to me but no problem. Ive since created a new email account and can sign in to that and messenger fine. Thats why i posted in "The shop" asking for team members to add new email address to messenger contact list so they can get hold of me instantly if they need to. I may well wait 48 hours before trying to sign into my main email account, because it was blocked through too many attempts at trying to sign in.

If that does not work i will be back on here trying to fix the problem if i/we can...lol
