My PC will not work!!

Hi, I have a bit of an issue with my pc, and am struggling to resolve it....

 

Everytime I switch on the pc, windows fails to load - instead I am presented with a black screen displaying the following message:

 

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys

 

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the original setup cd-rom.

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

 

Whenever I hit any key, the machine re-boots with the same screen. If I attempt to use the original set up cd-roms - nothing happens at all.

 

The problem originally occured two days ago whilst I was playing an online game - the game crashed and I was presented with a windows error message (unfortunately I didnt make a note of this error message at the time).

 

Any help/advice/assistance would be greatly appreciated - my hard drive contains a lot of my work over the last few years, including financial trackers and CV's - I would be devestated to lose this data (yes - I know i should have backed it up but hindesight is a wonderful thing!).

I'm not an expect, so expect any advice to come shorthanded.

 

Isn't it possible to reinstall windows without formatting your drive? You wouldn't be able to run any installed programs, but non installed programs, which I would assume would make up a large part of your work, would remain unaffected.

or you could hit esc or f4 during boot up to enter bios. once there find something similiar to boot device priority and put the cd rom drive first. xp is a bootable disc so it should boot from the disk. when it does just repair a windows xp installation.
