Telephone.

There is now a new policy (so I was told when I last had to activate my

RETAIL copy of XP by phone instead of the internet) that all versions of XP

are now only allowed ONE internet activation in the lifetime of the

software.

Use the Telephone Activation. There is no restrictions as to how many times you can activate on the same PC . The info by others is wrong.

That is simply untrue. You can activate as many times as needed on the same PC by telephone

He didn't say that. He said you can only activate ON LINE once.

READ MY POST. I said that I was told that there is now only one activation

BY INTERNET allowed. I mentioned nothing about the telephone.

Interesting, I would appreciate it if an MVP or someone from Microsoft

could confirm or deny this.

Well, about two weeks ago, I re-installed three OEM XPs, one Spanish and

two English and both activated on line so it seems the person you spoke

to is out to lunch. One of them I reinstalled three days after the first

time and it still activated on line. Glad to know your information isn't

correct :-)

It's not true. I just reinstalled XP on three computers, all generic

OEMs and all three activated on line with no problems.

Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure, courtesy of MS MVP

Carey Frisch:

1. Download and install the WGA Diagnostic Tool

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and

then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the "WGA

Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data

in a detailed post:

http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an

appropriate solution.

Good advice for WGA (I guess) but not so good for WPA, which is what the

OP is having problems with.

I think that when Gordon called he got some teenaged kid who couldn't

read the scripted answers so the kid made up an answer.

That is totally incorrect.

Exactly when were you told this, and what was the Microsoft telephone

number that you used when you received this advice.

Wrong. I just reactivated an OEM version automatically last night

after a clean install on a new hard drive. The version was

previously activated when new and reactivated automatically on at

least one other occasion since then.

I contacted Microsoft about this rumor last year. Their response

About three months ago and the 'phone number was the UK activation

number.....

I don't know how you find that number without going through the activation

process....

It's not wrong - I'm telling you what I was told when my RETAIL copy of XP

failed Internet activation on the SAME machine it has always been on, and is

STILL on.....

Then why was I told this by the "Activation" representative not THREE months

ago when my RETAIL copy of XP failed internet activation after a re-install

on the same machine it has always been on?

Did it work? Sounds like a bad approach to me, but I concede that

better approaches are not "easy" because the tools are hard to find.

I'm interested in seeing the answer to this as well. I don't know of

such a policy... do you know whether this policy is particular to

certain regions or products (e.g. XP Starter)?

This was in the UK, using a RETAIL copy of XP SP1 that was being

re-activated on the SAME machine (unchanged) that it was on previously. The

Internet activation failed, also the automated telephone activation. The

representative I spoke to told me this. About three to four months ago....
