Guest Ian Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Hi all. Problem - no audio after xp home re-install. Have read threads which offer solution and just need clarification please. Do I copy "machine.inf" to temp directory, modify (delete "exclude from select") and save? Do I also have to copy streamci.dll and swenum to same location? If above is correct what do I do next? Many thanks for your help Ian (no techie)

Simply reinstall your audio drivers. General drivers information: Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from: 1. The device mftr.'s website; OR 2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR 3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.). Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers. To find out what hardware is in your computer: 1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer. 2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway) 3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too although it might not work on Vista. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisor http://www.aumha.org/free.htm - Aida32 (hosted on Jim Eshelman's site) Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers http://www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" Guest Ian Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Re: No audio - again Thanks Malke I did use the soundcard cd to try to bring things back to life but no luck. In device manager I have a yellow exclamation mark alongside Plug and Play Software device enumerator. A search for new drivers didn't reveal any and the soundcard cd didnt help either. I have read threads about similar problems with the Software device enumerator but found the (apparently successful) instructions too difficult to follow. Hence the plea for help. Did you also install the drivers for your motherboard? When you install an operating system, any operating system, you then must install drivers for all the hardware inside the computer. This means motherboard (chipset) drivers, audio, video, network adapter, etc. Some operating systems come with basic drivers for common hardware (XP, Vista) and some don't. It sounds like you have not installed the motherboard drivers and perhaps the sound card is onboard. Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers http://www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" Guest Shara Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 RE: No audio - again Had the same problem with Vista...(no audio device installed) Try this it works.......first make sure you have all necessary upgrades. then go to the control panel>system>device manager.....highlight the sound controller.......uninstall the High Defination Sound Device and uninstall the driver (check box)........restart the computer and the system will reinstall both and the upgrade prevents it from happening again. -- Thanks! Guest Ian Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 RE: No audio - again Good morning and thanks for the replies. My hard drive failed but I a backup made about a month earlier (using Acronis). Strangely, after connecting the backup, I began receiving updates from Microsoft. Everything appeared to be working (including the sound card) until MS presented me with SP2 which I was sure I already had. I searched for problems with "no sound" In device manager the only problem is the yellow warning on "plug and play software device enumerator". Searching for advice on this warning produced other threads where there was a loss of sound and offering advice to resolve the problem by modifying "machine.inf" and also mentioning streamci.dll and swenum but I don't understand how to do this. So it was not a re-install, rather changing the hard drive from the dodgy one to my backup. Apologies for muddying the water. Thanks Ian (no techie) "Shara" wrote: > Had the same problem with Vista...(no audio device installed) > Try this it works.......first make sure you have all necessary upgrades. > then go to the control panel>system>device > manager.....highlight the sound controller.......uninstall the High > Defination Sound Device and uninstall the driver (check box)........restart > the computer and the system will reinstall both and the upgrade prevents it > from happening again. > -- > Thanks! > Shara > > > "Ian" wrote: > > > Hi all.
