Guest Joe Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 I am trying to repair one of our seniors members computer, it is an upgrade version of XP Home. Among other problems when I try to access Device Manager I get the message that mmc.exe cannot be found. Any thoughts please? -- Regards Joe Tasmania

Make sure this machine clean from viruses and malware. "WMI Diagnosis Utility" http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/topics/help/wmidiag.mspx More on that here: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?query=mmc.exe+cannot+be+found&dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support&cat=en_US_4fae9fed-da91-4a2a-9d2b-5dc71973d43c&lang=en&cr=US&pt=&catlist=&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

Check if the file "mmc.exe" is present in the %windir%\System32 folder. If this *is* the case, perform a repair install which may or may not fix the other problems as well: "How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us Note that all available system updates have to be reinstalled afterwards. If "mmc.exe" is *not* present, install this optional update replacing the missing file with the latest version of the "Microsoft Management Console" (mmc.exe): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907265/en-us Note that this update may require .NET Framework 2.0: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5 Check that system for malware in all cases. -- d-d
