AT&T said go to h**l

My 1999 dell computer chokes when trying to connect to the Internet. This

started about two months ago, I use Dial-up networking and I have to redial

up to 6 times before it will connect. I get the following:

Disconnected from AT&T

Dial-UP Networking was unable to complete the connection

Error: 629

You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed.

Double-click the connection to try again.

I stopped all virus and pop-up stoppers, tried different access numbers and

called AT&T (India) multiple times over a 2 month period. Basically they

said my modem drivers are out of date and I should contact Dell for an

update. Dell said I have the latest drivers. AT&T will not do anything, they

said it is because of the AT&T, SBC merger, the update of their modem which

dropped out the older drivers, and that is normal as newer software is

introduced. I can not talk to anyone except in India and they will not tell

me any name or telephone number for a person here in the USA headquarters

office that I can address this problem to. They claim that they do not know,

can't tell me or are not allowed to give out that information. In other

words "go to h**l". A little infuriation here!

Anyone know of a GOOD Internet service provider for us old folks using

antique software and hardware like w98 on an odd ball 1999 Dell computer?

You didn't say where you live. In North Texas and West Texas I'd recommend

NTS-Online with $10 unlimited dialup that served me well for three years

until I switched to broadband.

Try Earthlink unlimited time connection. Don't use their software. Stick

with OE or Outlook for mail, and IE or other well know browsers. Am using a

99 vintage external USR phone modem.

Don't understand their end using some other modem connection. How is the

language used different? Sounds like say-speak programmed tech help to me.

No aggressive firewall settings, I have Ad-Aware SE Pro with Ad-Watch, AVG

Anti-Virus 7.0 and AT&T Accelerator, no firewall. But none are running "now"

when I attempt to connect with Dial-Up Networking. Of course something else

could be running in the background that I'm unaware of. Prior to this

problem, I had those 3 programs set to run at start up and had been

operating that way for a year or more with out any problem.

And thanks Dave for the Earthlink unlimited time connection recommendation.

Tried this?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/280375

Additionally, pick up your phone and listen to it. Any noise? If so,

call your TelCo and have them fix the line.

DadiOH that information goes directly to the problem, thank you.

Unbelievably, today the computer is connecting perfectly. Outlook Express is

even noticeably faster. Do you suppose my repeated calls to AT&T hit a

nerve? Or, maybe someone at AT&T read this posting. Nah! Anyway, I will give

DadiOH's KB28037 from MS a try before I search for a new ISP using those

helpful web sites from John Dulak. However, if this computer continues to

work I will after a few days reply back with an update. Thanks again to all

for your great support. Sudy Nim

Seems like those programs are innocent. I see that dadiOH came up with

It could be, as dadiOH also said, that the phone line went bad in bad

Just remember that no ISP is better than your line to the TelCo. In

my experience, that line is the biggest source of connection problems.

Were you aware Worldnet has some internal newsgroups staffed by US

citizens that write plain english and do a very good job of support?

No need to deal with some buffoon that you can't understand.

Point your newsreader to news:netnews.wordnet.att.net and subscribe to

the news groups that start with "worldnet.help". Probably the best

place to start with your problem is

Thanks for the info Vince. No I was unaware of it. When I spoke to India I

repeatedly asked to speak to someone in the USA and was told they do not

have that information, no names, no telephone numbers not even the address

I was told by my cable service representative that they wouldn't support

Windows 98 anymore. However if you get a router compatible with Windows 98

you could run 98 through a router. I have a router and it runs Windows 98.

DadiOH looks like KB280375 is the answer. Three days now and about 6 start

ups noooo problem! The directions did create some confusion for a short time

as they leave out a step or two and it was not clear to me at first. For

instance, 4 files are first renamed and then the same files are

re-installed. So I was not sure what was meant by extract "preceding" files

from sfc. It took a couple of attempts to get it to work.

The entire set of instructions covers RAS (Remote Access Services)

authentication, PAP (unencrypted) and SPAP (encrypted). I assume SPAP is the

remote access client used as the fix is for a workaround of an encrypted

password but it is kind of vague to me at the moment due to the depth of the

subject

It is very strange that this problem appeared after 10 years with AT&T and

w98. I have to assume that the ISP changed something?

You deserve a BIG thank you.

Glad it worked, thanks aren't necessary. Tips are accepted though :)
