Gotta start somewhere

Ok, I'm new with servers be patient with me. I have my latest MS Action Pack

gear and I've been aching to install Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 -

but frankly didn't have the hardware here to support it.

But as luck would have it I seem to have a spare AM2 Sempron 3000+ in stock,

a motherboard to run it and 1GB of RAM and a 40GB HDD - and I'm thinking of

using this lot to build myself a server mainly so I can educate

myself....hook up two or three client machines to it and spend a while

getting my head around it hopefully.

I know the AM2 Sempron is probably not the ideal chip for Windows Server

2003 R2 Standard x64 - but I figure it will work - won't it?

Or will it perform like a dog and be hopeless?

Re: Gotta start somewhere

I have my server at home which i am using to study running an AMD sempron

2600 (think its that one) 32x and it runs like a dream. I wouldn't put it in

a production enviroment but to use to get to grips with the software then

i'm sure you will be suprised.

RE: Gotta start somewhere

2003 itself will run on next to nothing. However once you start adding

services and then loading those services with connections is where memory and

cpu speed can dwindle. But unless your planning on having sql server

installed or exchange with a ton of active mailboxes you should be just fine

:)
