:(!!!

Please help!

I was trying to run a system restore point after some problems with Nero software(shell manager database missing or corrupt).

My PC crashed whilst running retore point and now directs me to a blue screen and says run a CHKDSK/F, but i can't do anything at all?

An idiots guide would be great, as you've probably gathered i ain't a techy!

Thanks very much.

I have no idea what miniNT even is? Lol, sorry!

Just now, i have tried to reinstall Windows, it gets as far as the Installing Windows Section, but it comes up saying "The File 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click ok.

It comes up with GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROMO\1386

What exactly does it say on the copy of Windows XP that you have Mikey?

On my Copy? Do you mean the CD i'm using or on the PC?

On the PC- i used my Reinstallation DVD that came with the PC-Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2. I have used this to try and reinstall my PC. I installed the update Windows Service Pack 3 last night online, don't know if that makes any difference?

Does that help any?

Thanks.

I have replied? It's above the thread you've just posted? Post #13?

What have i missed out from my reply? And what is this miniNT thing you mentioned also? I really want to try and solve this so if you tell me what you need to know i can give you the info. Thanks

Ok Mikey we seem to have all kinds of problems here ok.

My PC crashed whilst running retore point and now directs me to a blue screen and says run a CHKDSK/F, but i can't do anything at all?

Go to Run and type chkdsk /f (note the space between the K and the forward slash)

Yeah, just got the system to boot from CD and put in the XP recovery disk.

It says i can re-install or repair? If i re-install will i lose everything on my PC as nothing is backed up?

What does it say when you can't re-install or repair?

C:\WINDOWS

or

F:\minint

Which windows installation would i like to log onto?

I have given you the Microsoft link regarding this issue already.

I have asked umpteen questions as have other members of staff and you have yet to come back with a clear and concise answer.

Please do so and then we can help you.

Ok, here is the story from the start-last night i was trying to upgrade my Nero 7 to Nero 8. I don't know why but it wasn't working. I also updated a Windows Service Pack 3 update yesterday(don't know if any of this helps you but i'm giving you everything). This morning i was doing a system restore to go back a few days to my old settings,my PC crashed in the middle of the restore, then brought up the blue screen with the chkdsk/f message. I couldn't do anything on the PC with the message so i went and found my reinstall dvd, which is where i am now. It is asking for the asms file on the windows xp professional media center service pack 2 cd. That is absolutely everything that has happended and everything i know. Can you help?

Mikey

We are trying to help but you are not coming back to us with replies to what we have asked, eg have you run check disk etc, if you could not run chkdsk then tell us why.

We can only answer via your responses Mikey and again we would ask that you slow down and be concise.

Hi mickey100174,

I can help with the last 2 questions there...

The administrators password is not usually set so unless you set it yourself there isn't one. By hitting enter here it will continue. With regards to the selction of C or F drives, windows is normally installed on the C drive and I suspect that the F drive here is some kind of external drive like a USB stick or external floppy/ harddrive?
