Hi Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help!

What a great site I am really impressed with how helpful you guys are - THUMBS UP TO YOU!

OK I need help with my computer but I must admit I really don't know where to start - what information you need etc. Would any one mind helping me from scratch? I kind of idiots step by step guide to breathing life in to my computer...

We had a lot of trouble with the PC soon as we got it off ebay. My sister got it off the seller and saw it working in Southend and when we got it to the house in Kent in didn't work. Our neighbour had a look and said we needed a new motherboard. So we got a new motherboard. We then got some extra RAM for it. It was a 256mb now it is 1gb. (although it does say on the System Properties<General page it has 256mb of RAM whilst on other pages it'll say about 1000mb of RAM) We also got a new graphics card for it ATI Radeon 9200 Series.

Our neighbour installed the RAM and graphics card a few weeks after he had installed the motherboard and got it working for us. But with the increased RAm and new graphics card it is still dead slow. Almost like a Commadore 64 it feels on some days!!! I can load up the internet go and make a cup of tea and sandwich and by the time I get back it is still loading up Internet Explorer!?!

I'm sure you probably need a lot more system information to identify what I need to tweak about - if you could please perhaps tell me a few steps to finding this information then I will do so and send it.

I can't play games as it is to slow. My mother and I only seem to use the computer for Internet, email, Word, Excel etc. Its driving my mother crazy as she is trying to run a business and buying this computer was meant to have been just right for running these programs.

I would love to be able to play games on this PC and we would both love it to be much faster. I know it should be much faster as it sometimes goes at such an unaturally slow speed...

If anyone reading this has the time to help me get this PC running to its potential I would be so grateful from the bottm of my heart I really would!

Cheers!

Hello Polly

Well there appears to be at least a couple of items that should not be running on the system. This will probably take a while to run and complete but please follow the instructions below which should be able to remove this malware.

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help

Your computer could be infected with Malware.

  • Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent.
It is a portmanteau of the words malicious and software.
The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.

  • Required Cleanup Steps
  1. Run a Temporary files cleaner
  2. Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if enabled
  3. Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners
  4. Run and Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner
  5. If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file

The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something.

The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed.

Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes.

The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours.

In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer.

Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean.

For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page

To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below.

From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range"

click the
Selection
choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware.

Do I need to remove programs from the Add/Remove program list? Or do you think it is more likely to be a hardware problem that needs resolving?

Polly - in your first post you said that you have 1 GB of RAM, but only 256 MB showing up in System Properties. Is this still the case?

Good question Kelly.

Polly,

Also repair hard drive errors which can often be the cause of speed degradation in your case:

Go to Start>Run, type in chkdsk /f and click ok (space between the K and the /)

Press Y at the next window and restart the computer which will initiate hard drive error correction.

Hi Kelly

Yes this is still the case... Peculiar! Is it not using the whole gb? When checking the system specs other ways it usually says that I have 1 gb of ram. I am confused why it does not show up on system properties

Run hard drive checking via Seths advice Polly and get back to us please.

I have done the hard drive check. It took a while. When I left the room and came back it must have finished as my desktop page had loaded up. Was I meant to have hung about to read the results of the hard drive check or can I obtain them still? To be honest I'm clueless to what to do I'm just following you guys instructions

And may I say thank you to you all for all the help you have given me so far I really appreciate it!

I'm concerned that Windows isn't seeing the RAM correctly. The RAM may have issues and may cause the machine to behave slow.

Are you familiar with starting in Safe Mode with Networking? If so, try that and let us know how the machine behaves. If you need instructions on getting into Safe Mode with Networking let us know and we can post instructions.

Polly,

When you first start your computer, immediately start tapping the F8 key. This will bring you to a menu in which you can use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode With Networking". Choose that option and report back if the computer is faster in that mode.

Ok I tried out Safe Mode with Networking and the machine behaved at lightening speed! I had to restart the computer back in Normal Mode as I could not access the internet in Safe Mode.

So what does this mean? Does this answer the question about the ram miss-reading in properties or does it mean something else?

Posted

It means the ram is fine and the problem is likely due to a program which starts up in Normal mode, but does not start up in Safe Mode.

Click on Start>Run and type in msconfig. Put a dot on Selective startup and click on the Startup tab. Put a dot on "Disable All", then click apply and ok. Restart the computer and test. Better now?

After that, go back to msconfig and put a check on all the Mcafee entries then click Apply>OK. Restart and test.

Almost there:)

it says that i need to log on as administrator to disable all. I ignored this and have just restarted the computer. So on the same screen i select the McAfee programs or have them deselected with the rest all selected?
Posted
Also there is only one McAfee Startup Item on that startup page - mcagent. Do I only have that selected? The Startup Item ctfmon has a tick in the box. Is this the item that cannot be deselcted unless I log on as administrator? Should I try to log on as administrator or just leave it? If so how do I log on as administrator?
Posted

The administrator error in msconfig is an XP glitch...just ignore it.

Ctfmon is part of Microsoft Office...don't worry about it.

Disable all from msconfig and restart. Any better now?

It seems a little faster...It hasn't gone to snail pace yet! Should I now enable McAfee? Do I not need these programs running on startup after all or are some them needed?

The only ones that need to be checked are the Mcafee entries and "jusched". Recheck those and see how the computer runs.

Well the computer restarted to the desktop in a third of the time it usually takes! BRILLIANT! I won't know if it is faster in other applications until I use them... Is there anything else I can do to tweak the computer up do you think or would you say it is probably working at its best now? Edited by Seth

It is a little faster but still likes to take its time to "think" especially when you try to to do 2 things at once e.g. load up another webpage whilst it is still halfway through loading up a previous page. DOwnloading email is rather slow still. It being a 2.2 GHz PC I would have thought it would be much faster than my old laptop which was 700 Mhz. When I compare them to each other I can't really tell there being much difference in performance. I could be wrong but I would have expected this PC to be much faster! Perhaps my expectations are too high
