Vista's "Startup Repair"

My computer shop has in it's presence about the 20th Vista computer with start up problems.

 

In all cases thus far, Vista's "Startup Repair" reports no problems found, or a problem it can't fix (not even with the Vista DVD).

I've had 2 Vista computers in the past few days where the user was unable

to login to Vista due to password failure issues. FIRST PC required a System

Restore to the day before the last windows updates, and the SECOND PC

required a password reset using PW reset utility on CD . SECOND PC had

this problem after several programs were uninstalled using normal uninstall

procedures. FIRST PC had this problem and only clue is that it received

a Windows update on the day the problem started.

My shop has had a few Vista systems in which the login password isn't accepted any longer:confused:

 

Forget about the Safe Mode mode alternative like an XP system....had to use the EBCD.

In XP there was often times a generic Administrator login in safe mode. A good failsafe option if you ask me. At least you could do things like change other account passwords.

 

In Vista this does not appear to exist. I'm thinking of making another Administrator account (with a password) if I choose to set a password for my current accounts. It never hurts to have more then one Administrator account.

 

As my grandkid gets older I'll probably have to do this. Kids will be kids.

A fail safe option is the Admin account.

 

It works great if you don't live in the real world.

 

You'll soon break down when it comes to, "Mom/Dad, I can't DO anything on this computer!"

That's a fact seth. No getting away from it. I miss that feature. And if there wasn't a password reset disk made then things get ugly fast.

 

How many people would take time to make such a disk even if they knew it was an option? Look at how many people don't make the recovery disks.

 

In my opinion there is plenty not to like about Vista. The stories I could tell you already. Add to that that most don't ship with a full Vista set of disks and it gets worse for repair options. Even if you had that option the Recovery Console is different.

I can't begin to tell you how many computers my shop receives in which the XP Reminder is still in msconfig. Password recovery disk? lol

 

On average, my shop receives two Vista customer calls a day asking, "can I go back to XP?"

 

The latest call for such was today (in which today is Sunday and yes I have no life lol). Anyway, she bought a Vista Acer laptop, hated Vista, and had a shop install XP on it. Long story short, the Vista hardware is not liking the XP drivers and she is having numerous problems given such.

I think this topic is based on the things Microsoft does that makes almost no sense. New operating systems and we could add other software like Office too.

 

Try running old software and hardware on Vista. Just get new everything for Vista. Bottom line is in my opinion Microsoft can't even make their own products compatable let alone anything else.

 

As for it being better I would like to know why. It's harder to work with and can be customized less. Far less intuitive too if you ask me.

 

Like I said there is much more different then you think. Try changing the System Restore size or how often it sets a point. Try dealing with the task schedular.

 

It can be done but you really need to know your stuff. Not for average users. And I can go on. lol

That's exactly why my customers say they hate Vista. It looks pretty, but is harder to use for basic functions.

 

Sheesh, it takes one double click to change the time in XP, but about five plus the UAC to do the same in Vista. Don't even get me started on the mess that Vista calls Networking. Try and find your network connection and RR the IP.

 

Oh, and why does it take 15 minutes for Vista to find a networked XP computer?

 

Anyway, IMO Vista is a cash cow and the dung goes hand in hand with the hardware manufacturers.
