I am running Windows Version 6.0. The newer Norton anti virus programs are

not supported. What does everyone else use? What's the best?

Windows Version 6.0? What's that when it's at home? Vista? Although I

thought that that was 5.2 but am unable to check at the moment. Win Me is

4.90.3000 and XP 5.1. Is it possible you are thinking of Microsoft Works

which has a version 6 which was released about the same time as Win Me and

often bundled by OEMs with Win Me.

> The newer Norton anti virus programs are not supported.

If you are running Win Me be truly thankful for this. Norton AV is one of

the most destructive products on the market today and not only does it

fail abysmally to protect PCs on which it is installed but also causes

severe damage to many especially those running Win Me.

> What does everyone else use? What's the best?

Anything but Norton. You have plenty to choose from including Kaspersky,

NOD32, TrendMicro, Avast, AVG, Computer Associates, Panda and AntiVir.

Win2K = NT5.0

WinXP = NT5.1

Win2003 = NT5.2

Vista = NT6.0

Thanks David,

I don't have a Vista box/image available at the moment and had forgotten

that it was W2K3/XP x64 that was 5.2 (which I do have running on another

box).

Personally, I would lean away from McAfee AV, as well.....especially, with

Me. There are just too many free AV's out there that are more than

adequate.......AVG and Avast! coming to mind.

Heirloom, old and you should listen carefully to

McAfee is one of the free AVs. At least mine was. I installed it with AOL,

which is now free.

You may have obtained McAfee free, but it is not a free application. You

just got it as part of a package for which the provider (AOL) probably paid

a fee to McAfee. You can't obtain it free from McAfee.

Is that aimed at me or Eric? I presume it's Eric, since I don't use AOHell

*or* McAfee. I am a "Yank", by your definition, but by no means insular.

Sometimes rude, and often ignorant, but I try. I don't like the term Yank,

either, since I'm from the West and think of Yanks as those folks who hail

from the original thirteen colonies. You know, the ones with the closest

ties to the old country, [:-)

LOL!! No, it was aimed at Mr. Know-it All......

Oops....No, it was aimed at Arrogant Eric. Better make sure I am very

clear on that, grin.

Eric is insular because like a few "Yanks", he has never travelled

outside the US of A. I would assume you have ventured perhaps across

our border??

My daughter lives out in Western Canada and you guys have a peculiar

distaste for the better parts of your respective countries. Yes, we are

more British and rather like Queen Lizzie. I speak for myself, of

course.

For some reason, I was getting you mixed up with a Richard (MVP) who

lived near me. Colour me blonde!!

Cheers.....the Half-Brit. (that is spelled with a "Br" not a "W", ok??)

Re: Windows ME anti-virus

I'm sure I can come across as rude sometimes, but I try to at least treat

others in kind. I was only being rude to Mike M because he was rude first.

You on the other hand have been rude to me for no apparent reason.

I have never travelled outside of the country, partly because our country is

so big most of us never have to leave it, and partly because I can't afford

to travel. Right now I can barely pay the bills, so I couldn't even afford

the gas to get to Canada and back. If I had time and money I would travel,

at least to where we could drive (Canada/Mexico). If foreigners are all as

rude as you, I'm not sure seeing those places would be worth having to deal

with the people.

My first wife is from Venezuela. I lived there for most of the five years we

were married and we have a daughter who now lives with me (she's 29.) My

fourth and current wife is Canadian, from the Yukon. We met in a Yahoo! Chat

room called Canaduh over ten years ago, courted for a year via ICQ before

finally meeting, and married four months later -- had to wait for her

divorce. I've been to B.C and the Yukon, but only to visit (and to move my

wife and her kids.)

Whereas my wife has seen nearly all 50 states (when she was young, she was a

carnie and then a long-haul truck driver), I've only been to a handful if

you don't count one long Greyhound trip from Seattle to Florida. In fact,

I've been to more foreign countries than U.S. states, *including* that bus

trip. My Dad was a captain for Pan Am, 747's. I got to fly for a nominal fee

($13) and took some advantage of that, though not as much as I should have.

My third wife and our two sons still live in Hawaii. I lived there for five

years in the 90's. I know that's not "foreign", but it *is* overseas, <g>. I

think that's the only state my current wife has never been to. Good thing,

too. Wouldn't want those two getting together to compare notes!

That's OK. Four is enough. If I ever find myself single again (which will

only happen if I'm widowed), I'm going to stay that way. Might gather a

coterie of nymphs, though. What's your daughter's name, eh?
