internet connection drop

I dont know if this is the right part of the forum but i need help, my internet connection drops every few minites signing me out of anything that needs an active connection(msn etc). im using a wireless connection to the router downstair's but it isnt stable. why? can anyone help?

Is this a new phenomenon? There are a number of things that might cause this. I've seen where a cordless phone will interfere with the wireless Internet signal. Someone opening a refrigerator or oven door that is between the router and the user can cause this. If the signal is weak enough, someone walking by can cut you off.

 

Other causes include hardware and software problems.

 

I'd like to see you connect the computer directly to the router with a cable to rule out software problems. If it works correctly when connected directly, we need to look for interference or wireless hardware problems.

i dont think its like that, every computer in house(inc the one thats plugged in - main pc) looses connection. the pc downstairs is running out of memory now(a few years old and loads of stuff stored on it) if the cpu is maxed out could that have anything to do with it(im a tech noob so i dont no much about this stuff)

If every computer loses the Internet connection, you should call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) when it happens to see if it's an ISP problem. If not, replace the router.

If you have specific types of router i.e Netgear you need to go into the routers home page (will be an ip address, and a username and password under the router or in the papers that came with it)

and type the Mac addresses of the other Pc's into the router page their will be an option for adding other PCs to it (cant remember what its called from memory), and that will then allow them to connect to the router and not drop the connection.

to get the Mac addresses open a command window - run, cmd.exe and then type ipconfig/all and hit enter - scroll to the top and there will be your mac address

right, I dont know what the problem was, but it has disappeared after a power cut to area. I dont have a clue how it helped but it did, thanks for your help anyway.
