Guest Agzee Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 This evening I had a 'pop-up' on screen advising me that a new version of Java was available (ver. 1.6.0_02) and I clicked to enable automatic download and installation of the new version. The installaltion went fine and the new version is installed although when I check C:/Program Files/Java there are two folders:- jre 1.6.0_01 and jre 1.6.0_02 Obviously the new installation did not remove the old version of Java, therefore decided to remove the old version via Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. When I checked for Java jre 1.6.0_01 in order to remove it I come across two Java entries listed as:- Java SE Runtime Environment 6 update 1 Java Update 2 I assuming that Java SE Runtime Environment 6 update 1 relates to Java version 1.0.6_01 but I do not want to remove anything and make a mess of things. Can anyone confirm that removing Java SE Runtime Environment 6 update 1 will get rid of jre 1.6.0_01? Agzee
Guest Tom Willett Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Re: Java jre1.6.0_02 auto update Yes, it will. And, after you remove it via control panel, be sure to check your programs folder and delete any remnants. In addition to Tom's reply, next time remove the old version of java before installing the new one. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell]

With it being an automatic download and installation I did not get the opportunity to remove the old version first. I think next time the Java program informs me that there is an update available I will go to their website and do a manual download, at least that way I can remove the old program first before manually installing the updated version. I turn off the automatic checking for updates in the java console, and manually check occasionally for updates. When I see there is a new one, I first delete the old one, then download the new one and install it. Here is a direct link to the site that is updated first with the newest updates. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp About half way down the page look at the entry for Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update. That's where the latest is listed. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell]

That's where the latest is listed. Thanks for advice and URL link. I have been trying to find the 'Java control panel' on my system, finally located it in Windows Control Panel! Never look in the most obvious places. Have now switched off "automatically check for updates". Cheers - Agzee
