Guest Mardler C Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Hi I'm sorry I haven't a clue if this is the right place to ask this - but here goes anyway and your help would be appreciated. A friend & colleague uses Microsoft Word X for Mac and whenever she sends me a Word document attachment I can't read it. I run on XP Pro - have Office Pro Suite 2000. Is there anything I can do to be able to automatically open these documents. Thanks Mardler C

Without a file extension, you can't associate a program with a file type.

Look down the left side for microsoft.public.word and expand it to see the choices. http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell]
Guest Mardler C Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Re: Can't open attachment sent by Mac File extension as received was .doc which is why I couldn't understand why it wouldn't open - or rather it would open but was gobble=de=gppk of about two lines and nothing else - in what I know to have been a two page document. You should ask this question in a Word newsgroup, not here in an XP one. The people there are much better equipped to help you with Word problems. 2. Not being able to open a file and being able to open it with "gobbledegook" are two entirely different symptoms. When you don't describe your symptom carefully the *first* time, you waste the time of those trying to help you. I'm sure Harry would never have asked you what the extension was if you had originally told us about the "gobbledegook." > "Harry Ohrn" wrote: > > > What is the file extension? So what happens when you save the file (instead of trying to open it from a link icon in Outlook) and then try opening it from the hard disk?
Guest Harry Ohrn Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Re: Can't open attachment sent by Mac Try saving the file then renaming it remembering to add the file extension ..doc Another option might be to try a conversion program like this one http://www.dataviz.com/products/conversionsplus/index.html?redirect=cppanergy -- Harry Ohrn MS MVP [shell\User] http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp "Mardler C" <Mardler C@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:32B7FF93-B6BF-4E81-98AD-67B19A09812A@microsoft.com... > Hi > I'm sorry I haven't a clue if this is the right place to ask this - but > here > goes anyway and your help would be appreciated. > A friend & colleague uses Microsoft Word X for Mac and whenever she sends > me > a Word document attachment I can't read it. Apology accepted, but I hasten to add that I didn't say what I did to give you a hard time, but rather to help you when you ask questions in the future. Describing systems accurately and carefully, providing the exact verbatim text of any messages you get, etc. is very important. > > > "Ken Blake, MVP" wrote: > > > On Tue, 24 Jul 2007 14:46:02 -0700, Mardler C > > <MardlerC@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > > > > File extension as received was .doc which is why I couldn't understand why it > > > wouldn't open - or rather it would open but was gobble=de=gppk of about two > > > lines and nothing else - in what I know to have been a two page document. > > > Thanks > > > > > > Let me point out two things: > > > > 1.
