windows xp repair problems

Hi, my sister's computer was not loading xp. The following error occurred.

winlogon.exe unable to locate component

this application has failed to start because ODBC32.dll was not found.

Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

she was told to repair xp. she went through the steps to repair as per

instructions in previous posts. She got past the entering of product key

screen and now there is just a blue screen with no text on it. It has been

that way for quite a long time. Is it frozen? How can she fix this. Please

advise.

Thanks

RE: windows xp repair problems

Could be a hardware problem. Open the case and unplug everything but the hard

drive and CDROM. Repair install XP.

Re: windows xp repair problems

it sounds like

that there a few

issues that seem

to be cascading, thus

the failed attempt to

repair the o.s.

go ahead a reboot with

the windows cd and go

into the recovery console

and run a chkdsk at the

c prompt.

then reboot without

the cd and see

if you can log into

safemode with networking.

then let us know what your

status is...

Re: windows xp repair problems

ok,

you should try the repair

installation again.

this is really the only option

you have left other than using

the recovery console again with

other commands.

when you initiate the repair

windows again, be sure that the

only things connected to the pc

are a keyboard, mouse and monitor.

so be sure that everything else is unplugged,

except the power cord, of course.

keep us posted....

Re: windows xp repair problems

I will tell her to do this. And if this doesn't work? Should she just take

it somewhere for repair or is there another option. She does not want to

lose what is on there. Thanks again

Re: windows xp repair problems

ok,

some bios's have the option

to set up all the settings with

a single click. it seems that

in your case, the bios quick set

may have defaulted the initial

boot up device to be the harddrive.

for most computers this is fine,

but since you need to boot the

cd, you need to set the bootup

device from the harddisk to cdrom.

inside the bios, there is an option to

boot via the cd rom. look for

the setting to enable it, then you

can boot from the windows cd

and begin the repair....

if you recall, the original

issue was due to that obdc

driver. so let's hope that

you will encounter

no difficulties with repairing

the operating system with

your windows cd.

if the repair fails, then we can

try to something else...

Re: windows xp repair problems

thanks she has a dvd drive as well as cdrom and she hooked up the dvdrom and

it worked and she ran the repair. now when she starts the computer she get

this:::

"We apologize for the iconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully.

A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was

automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose 'Last Know

Good Confuguraltion' to revert to the most recent setings that worked.

If a previous startup attemp was interrupted due to a power failure or

because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what

caused the problem, choose 'Start Windows Normally'.

1.Safe Mode

2.Safe Mode wth Networking

3.Safe Mode with Command Prompt

4.Last Know Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

5.Start Windows Normally"

Any other suggestions??

thanks

Re: windows xp repair problems

ok,

sounds like your making

progress....

however, i am not sure

if your repair was successful,

since you should have been

able to boot up with the

that apology.

never the less, the repair installation

is still on the table to do again, if

you can access the o.s.

what might be a good idea

is to select the option to boot

up with the last know good

configuration. hopefully, this

option will not have any references

to that obdc driver and you will

boot normally into the desktop.

if the option above doesn't work

then try the safemode option and

see if you can access the desktop

again....

RE: corrections..

RE: corrections..

she tried a repair again and could not access windows. she had a friend over

and he decided to reinstall windows. does this mean everything she had was

gone? now when she starts up it loads xp but the screen shows a funny

display. she said it looks like a kids drawing. does this mean the problem

was her video card. it is integrated into the motherboard so does this mean

a new mobo?

thanks

Re: windows xp repair problems

not sure.

basically, you first had

issues with logging into

windows because of a failed

obdc driver.

then you say that a repair

installation could not be

performed, however, your

friend somehow got you

into a desktop, and it has

an unusual display.

the options your friend had were

to install windows into a new partition

or installed it over the pre-existing

windows. unfortunately i cannot

tell which installation your

friend may have performed from here.

however, if your friend installed windows

into a new partition, then at least

you still have the opportunity to

work on the former o.s.

regarding what you are describing

with your display settings, it may

that the resolution is off and

the icons you are seeing

look like children's blocks.

again, i can't be sure from here

if the display resolution is set very low

or you may need a video driver. it is unlikely

that your video crashed when you originally

only had an issue with an obdc driver.

however, you can right click on the desktop,

select properties, then look for

the resolution and increase the ratio

and see if this will help make it look better.

also, the bios may have a graphic/video shadow

option. you may want to make sure it is

enabled and the size is around 64megs, which

is typically the standard for most pc's.

Re: windows xp repair problems

thanks again for your reply. her friend did an installation over

pre-existing windows. on startup the resolution is 640x480 with no option to

change, no previous restore points to restore back to. her computer is an

emachines (i know we have been told in the past about the integrity of

emachines) and we downloaded the drivers onto the desktop for it. even the

cdrom does not work so i am assuming the drivers are necessary for this.

where does she put the drivers? and is there a possibility to recover

pictures and files that were on there prior to this whole mess?

thanks

Re: windows xp repair problems

ok,

at least you are back

into windows now.

the display seems to be set

at regular ole vga and you

need svga instead.

in regards to the files,

pics, etc, you will simply

have to browse around your

disk with the explorer. if you

find them then you should make

a copy of them onto cd.

i think they should still be somewhere

on the disk, unless your friend

formatted the disk as well.

unfortunately, anytime you do a repair or

a re-install of windows, all the restore points

from the former o.s. are worthless so they

are wiped out. however, personal files are

not system files, so your chances that they

are on the disk are pretty good.

in regards to drivers, normally

those special disks that come with

the pc have a setup program that will automatically

install the drivers.

what you need to do at this time

is to go to the emachine website

and look your model number for

faq's, patches, drivers and updates to download.

if you find any on the website, they

probably supersede the ones on the disk.

i would like to emphasize on the f.a.q.'s

because there may be special instructions

and features and methods that can

enlighten you about your computer. i

have no experience with EMachines.

also, you may want to find out

why a repair install of windows was

not one of your options and another faq

may be to get the instruction to set

the resolution, etc.

maybe your emachine has a method to

restore it to factory settings as well. if so,

there will be an faq. however, do not do

a factory restore, if one is available

until you can get to your personal files

and move them to cd.

seemingly, it sounds like this thread

is basically resolved; as you now have

access to windows.

at this time you have to rebuild the your

system with the updates from both your emachine

site and microsoft.
