Guest JD_busi Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 What is the procedure to install Windows XP SP 2 if I am performing a clean install of Windows XP SP 1 first? Do I need to load the latest hardware drivers and run Windows Update before I install SP 2, or can I just load SP 2 immediately after installing XP SP 1? Should Anti-Virus and Internet Security software be installed after SP 2 or before?

Of course, if you're talking about a CD that has the OS with the SP1 update, that's a different question. I don't think it matters whether you install drivers, etc, before or after you install SP2. I think I'd add SP2 before hitting Windows Update because SP2 will have lots of updates rolled into it, sparing you the necessity of downloading all of them. -- Tim Slattery MS MVP(DTS) Slattery_T@bls.gov http://members.cox.net/slatteryt

Should Anti-Virus and Internet > Security software be installed after SP 2 or before? The first thing to do is to try to slipstream your XP CD to SP2. Starting from a bare drive, I would install XP first, then basic motherboard and device drivers, then SP2 (not via Windows Update, but from a downloaded SP2 file), then Windows Updates, then the A/V app. Don't browse anywhere other than to the Windows Update site until the A/V is installed. Guest JD_busi Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Re: Procedure to clean install Windows XP SP 1 and SP 2 Thanks Patrick - those are the steps I was leaning toward. I just wanted to get someone else's opinion, so I get it right the first time. Install your anti-virus. Connect to the Internet and download new antivirus definitions. Download/install all Windows critical updates.
