Guest Tracy Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 I am using Windows XP professional. I not sure if I can explain correctly but this is what I did. I was trying to install adobe flash player. It seemed like it would install but never work. It did work in Mozilla though. Anyway I went to adoble for support and from the systems I read I decided that it must be a privelidge issue. I have administrater privledges but not the administrater. If that makes sense. Adobe had directions on how to fix this problem. I had to go the regedit not sure which one and compare my screen with them one they showed as correct. The only significant differance was at the bottom of the screen, it showed 2 different settings to choose from. There were square boxes to check or uncheck. The adobe screen showed no boxes checked and my screen had one. So I unchecked it. It said something about child folders or something. But what it is doing now is crazy. I cant access any of my folders or programs. It wont even load windows. I have to have it load from windows xp cd. Then i can see the files but no programs can associate any folders with that program. Even regedit says that messege. I cant reinstall windows because that setup.exe has no file extention associated with it.So I want to reformat and start over but I cant get it to do anything at all. Help

Help I suppose the first question is: Do you want to re-install Windows or do you want to spend an hour or two trying to fix up your problem? If you want to re-install Windows: Do you have a recent backup of your important files, including your EMails, on an independent medium? Do you have the installation CDs for all your software?
Guest Craig S Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 RE: Help I really messed up this time Until the experts show up, can you try System Restore (earlier date) via any manner? (ie) via Start-Help & Support link, via Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools, via C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe, via Start-Run-msconfig-General tab-Launch System Restore link @ bottom. I'm guessing at this but maybe that will do it. "Tracy" wrote: > I am using Windows XP professional. I not sure if I can explain correctly but > this is what I did. Guest Tracy Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 RE: Help I really messed up this time Hi and thank you. I cant do any of those things. I went to start-run-regedit It wouldnt work. I tried start=run-mycomputer. etc nothing works. It says to go to that programs control panel and change the folder options. something close to it anyway. I had to take that hard drive out and put an old one in to use my computer so most of this is from memory. At this point Im ready to start over.. But how "Craig S" wrote: > Until the experts show up, can you try System Restore (earlier date) via any > manner? Guest Pegasus \(MVP\) Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Re: Help I really messed up this time To reload Windows, do this: - Read he manual that came with your laptop. You must find you which key to press for your boot options. It is often F10 or F12. - Reboot the machine and press this key. - Insert your WinXP CD. - Select "Boot from the CD drive". - Select "Install Windows XP" when prompted. - Allow your hard disk to be formatted. - Continue loading Windows XP. Note that many laptops have an option to restore Windows to its factory condition. This would be the preferred method to fix your problem. Again you should check your manual to find out how to do this.
