An activation form keeps coming up on start up. It claims my copy of Windows

was activated by another user. I am supposed to reactivate my Windows XP.

It is also asking me for my credit card number although it says I will not be

billled. Is this a legit Windows prompt, or is it a internet based scam of

some sort. The Windows XP is installed on the one home computer and the

product key sticker is on the case, so no one else could have gotten it. The

computer was bought about two years ago, with no problem before.

Sounds bogus to me. The request for a credit card number is an

immediate red flag. Also, a copy of XP is not registered to a user but

to a computer: the activation process collects data identifying the

machine but asks for no personally identifying information.

(Registration, which is optional, will ask for some identifying data.)

If you change the configuration of your computer enough that another

activation is necessary, it will either do it silently via the

Internet, or give you a phone number to call to get things sorted out.

Nope you are infected with a nasty phishing worm that is attempting to

steal your credit card information.
