Guest MRB Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 I have just installed Windows XP Pro and all the associated updates on my PC. I have also cleaned up my user associated start menus by moving the short cuts to the user accounts I want them to reside. I now notice a 5 second delay when I try to select the All Users\start menu folder from within My Computer (i.e., selecting My Computer, then C:, then Documents and Settings, then All Users, then Start Menu). If I go to it by right clicking the Start menu button on the lower left corner of the screen it is instantaneous. I also get the delay when I use the back arrow key to come out of the Start Menu. This phenomena does not happen with any other user specific folder. Any ideas? thanks Mike
Guest MRB Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 RE: Opening All Users\start menu is very slow More information: As I continue to finish my installation: I have now added Live OneCare virus protection Ran a tune-up (defrag, scan, etc.) I still have only one user account (Administrator). I have delayed adding more user accounts until I figure out this issue. I have simply been moving shortcuts between the Add User\Start Menu folder and the Administrator\Start Menu folder. Further information: 1G ram 2 GHz AMD processor - I am at work and do not remember the exact name (3 years old) I am not on a network (I use a modem to access the internet) Except for selecting the All Users\Start Menu folder everything is very responsive. I have also found out that I can recreate the issue if I use exployer (as opposed to My Computer) as long as I work in the file view side (name right window?) and not the folder tree side (left side of exployer). Everything works fine when I use the folder tree side. Note: when the delay occurs, I hear the disk thrashing a bunch. Hope this helps thanks Mike

It solved the same problem for me.
Guest MRB Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Re: Opening All Users\start menu is very slow Before I saw your response I did some further movements of shortcuts between user start menus (takes a while to get things just right <smile>). In the process it appears to have gotten a lot better. It is now only about a 1 second pause for the all users start menu (the other start menus are instantaneous). After I saw your suggestion, I did a chkdsk /f. I was not able to see a difference. It may be the slight pause I see now is normal. Maybe my moving further items fixed a file problem similar to what chkdsk does. Not quite sure but I really appreciate the help! Mike
