Opening All Users\start menu is very slow

I have just installed Windows XP Pro and all the associated updates on my PC.

I have also cleaned up my user associated start menus by moving the short

cuts to the user accounts I want them to reside. I now notice a 5 second

delay when I try to select the All Users\start menu folder from within My

Computer (i.e., selecting My Computer, then C:, then Documents and Settings,

then All Users, then Start Menu). If I go to it by right clicking the Start

menu button on the lower left corner of the screen it is instantaneous. I

also get the delay when I use the back arrow key to come out of the Start

Menu. This phenomena does not happen with any other user specific folder. Any

ideas?

thanks

More information:

As I continue to finish my installation:

I have now added Live OneCare virus protection

Ran a tune-up (defrag, scan, etc.)

I still have only one user account (Administrator). I have delayed adding

more user accounts until I figure out this issue. I have simply been moving

shortcuts between the Add User\Start Menu folder and the Administrator\Start

Menu folder.

Further information:

1G ram

2 GHz AMD processor - I am at work and do not remember the exact name (3

years old)

I am not on a network (I use a modem to access the internet)

Except for selecting the All Users\Start Menu folder everything is very

responsive. I have also found out that I can recreate the issue if I use

exployer (as opposed to My Computer) as long as I work in the file view side

(name right window?) and not the folder tree side (left side of exployer).

Everything works fine when I use the folder tree side. Note: when the delay

occurs, I hear the disk thrashing a bunch.

Hope this helps

thanks

Try a CHKDSK /f on the drive. It solved the same problem for me.

Re: Opening All Users\start menu is very slow

Before I saw your response I did some further movements of shortcuts between

user start menus (takes a while to get things just right <smile>). In the

process it appears to have gotten a lot better. It is now only about a 1

second pause for the all users start menu (the other start menus are

instantaneous). After I saw your suggestion, I did a chkdsk /f. I was not

able to see a difference. It may be the slight pause I see now is normal.

Maybe my moving further items fixed a file problem similar to what chkdsk

does. Not quite sure but I really appreciate the help!
