Hi Guys!

Noobie to thf site here! But pretty good on the old tech side! Right, question for you all:

I have just installed a new P4i65G and 2.6 P4 in my machine. Built it all up and transferred my HDD accross. Now I KNOW what you're going to say about me having popped XP on it a-fresh...that will be my last resort at the moment!

I had a few IDE related BSOD, which I sorted by plugging in my HDD to my old mobo and changing the controller drivers to the standard ones. Now, once I did that, I then loaded up to the login window of XP Pro...only to find that my keyboard (ps/2) and mouse (USB) are not working at all! The they work fine on my old mobo and the keyboard is happy enough to let me navigate through the BIOS, but when it actually loads the login, it stops working, so I can't actually log in...

Now, here's the funny part: The NUM Lock light is on...but that's it. Also, if I plug the mouse in using the PS/2 adaptor, the light on the bottom of the mouse is on, but it's still unresponsive. If I use USB for the mouse, the light flickers for a couple of seconds (and is on while in BIOS) but then goes out when on the main screen.

I'm stuck! I've moved the jumpers on the ps/2 usb power pins to both positions and they still haven't worked.

Help please!! If you can sort this, I'll have your babies!!

Thanks in advance guys!

Noel

Hi and welcome to free computer help.

Ok is the HDD SATA or IDE?

sounds like the OS is having trouble with the USB - they are supplying power but not the interface to use them -

boot into safe mode and see if they work there.

come back and let me know.

Chances are that windows just needs to boot and will pick the drivers up in safe mode. (from your mobo disk that you will put in the drive before booting to safe mode ;))

Hi Dalo!

Thanks for the welcome and the reply!

I booted up into safemode yesterday, but it still wouldn't let me move the mouse to log in as an administrator!

Should I pop the adaptor on it and try it as a PS/2 mouse?

Get into safe mode and press CTRL ALT and DELETE you can then navigate those menus via the keyboard up and down keys and enter ;)

try it with the adapter on at the same time - if it dont work do the above

Ahaaaa!!

I'll have to try that when I get home from work, but that'll be my next step! Thanks! You think the keyboard will work in safemode then..?

I'll let you know what happens! Though if anyone else has any theories, please let me know!!

Thanks again, Dalo!

Ok let's get this right Bunni, you've got a new box and you put the old hard drive in with XP on it yes?

Lets' get this question answered first.

The next question is what does this mean please?

I'm stuck! I've moved the jumpers on the ps/2 usb power pins to both positions and they still haven't worked.

More info please honey. :)

Running an XP loaded drive straight across isn't a good idea. I would suspect that even if you got the drivers working, other issues would ensue.

Much easier to run a repair install of XP.

You need all the new MOBO DRIVERS installing - BUT you may have issues with this as the old HDD still has the old ones on - its not just a case of removing them as Windows uses them to work your PC.

There is no easy way around this but if you have checked the BIOS and all the settings are ok in terms of USB support etc.

You will need to reinstall windows
