Hi Alex

Welcome to FPCH

Can't you connect to the net at all or is it just a Page 404 error?

Please bear with us while our Network expert gets online.

Thank you.

as i said my laptop connects to the network but when i open my browser it says that no connection was found (or something like that). it doesn't happen when i use an ethernet cable, only when i'm using wireless. i assume its something worng with my browser settings but i don't know where to start

Alex,

I don't think it would be your browsers settings, however it is more likely a router or connection setting.

Firstly, can you tell me the IP Address you have when you connect to your wireless network?

You can do this by going to Start, clicking on Run and typing in cmd and hitting ok. This then should bring up the command prompt - a black screen with white writing.

Then type ipconfig and hit the Enter key.

You will then see 4 settings: Connection-specific DNS Suffix, IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway.

If you could post the results in a reply, i should be able to assist you a little more.

Secondly, do you know what make / model your router is? On several routers there is an option for MAC Address control, which basically only allows certain MAC Addresses to access the internet. It is a security setting, mainly on the Wireless settings of the router which would cause the same problem you are having.

In addition to what Mike said, please try a PING command. I'll just copy/paste some of Mike's post and modify it for PING.

You can do this by going to Start, clicking on Run and typing in cmd and hitting ok. This then should bring up the command prompt - a black screen with white writing.

Then type PING followed by some web site (for example "PING www.yahoo.com" without the quotes) and hit the Enter key. Let us know what the results are.

Also do you have an anti-virus program that has a button for updating it? If so, try to update the program. Let us know if it finds the server and updates.

i'm pretty sure it is my browser settings cos it happened before and someone fixed it by fiddliing around with them. but i don't know what he did. but then again no programs that need an internet connection work either so i don't know. I can't give you the settings at the moment cos i'm not at home but i'll post them up in a week or so.

If it works through an ethernet cable then it is surely the settings on the router - what is the make and model of the router?

I know that Netgear ones you need to put the MAC address in the router settings in order for it to let you connect to the router - come back with the model of the router and I will tell you how to set the settings in the router.

Try this

IT is quite possible that you have your Wireless Network Adaptor set to a manual address thus giving your Wireless a Connected State in Windows Zero Configuration. If this is the case you will need to do the following

click on start > control Panel > Network Connections. Right Click on your Wireless Card and go to properties. on the new dialog that opens click on Internet Protcol and then click properties make sure it set to Obtain an IP address Automatically and make sure that then its set to obtain a DNS automatically as well.

once this is completed

click on start then run

in run type CMD

then type "ipconfig /release" and press enter without the quotes

then type "ipconfig /renew" and press enter without the quotes

this should release all Network cards IP address'es and renew them

once this is done then type "ipconfig /flushdns" and press enter without quotes.

This should hopefully solve your problem

Regards
