Guest carl feredeck Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 interesting! fastAero is a new free program for applying the Aero Glass with blur effects on Windows XP. * Very smart blur algorithm with low cpu load. * Works without any other tools , such as WindowBlinds , StyleXP. * You don't need to install any thing or unstall anything. So do the program. http://fastaero.wordpress.com/ screenshot: http://fastaero.files.wordpress.com/2007/07/s1.jpg

Guest dobey Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Re: FastAero free! : Glass,Blur in XP! I expect if you gave a XP Aero theme to most Vista users they wouldn't know the difference between the two Oses. Things like touting Aero as a virtue is the problem because it is a triumph of style over substance. What's the point of having faster hardware if is is going to be bogged down by useless graphics. The crowd being catered for is those who use their pcs for little more than screen saver viewing. Even with the eye candy turned off, Vista is slower and offers nothing significant for the average user over XP. Guest Kurt Herman Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Re: FastAero free! : Glass,Blur in XP! You are quite wrong. At least for me, Vista is very much faster then XP was, on the same machine. Then I've had a good video card, and tons of ram for several years. Stop making blanket statements that Vista is slower, cause it isn't. What may interest you more than the Aero look is the modern composition engine that aero relies on. It is more efficient than what was available in XP. Cheers, R.

Guest Kurt Herman Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 Re: FastAero free! : Glass,Blur in XP! Why would you turn Aero off? Of course its going to be slower if you shift the "desktop drawing" work to the CPU, instead of letting the GPU handle it. Guest dobey Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Re: FastAero free! : Glass,Blur in XP! Guest Kurt Herman Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Re: FastAero free! : Glass,Blur in XP! What are you talking about, dobey? Frank was agreeing with me. You said Aero uses too much CPU, and I stated it uses LESS CPU then the old windows GDI, because it makes SPECIFIC use of those shiny new GPUS that most modern video cards have. If you have a decent video card (mine is a 2 year old 6600GT, which is plenty fast), you can see the effect yourself. Turn off aero, and use an old "basic" widows skin. This drops back into CPU GDI mode. See how slow it is? See all the crappy artifacts left behind as windows close and the cpu struggles to redraw the screen? Turn aero back on and see how windows SNAP open. See the nifty lack of garbage left on the screen when moving, closing windows. Look at the CPU meter in your side bar and see how little of the CPU is being used. Get with the 21'st century. OSX uses GPU acceleration for its Desktop. Linux has just added Beryl to do the same for itself, and Vista has done the same for Microsoft. Maybe you'd be happer running a nice CGA desktop with windows 3.0.
