Sound problem!

Hi guys

 

I have a problem with the sound on my pc - there isnt any! When i try to play music it says -

 

'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.'

 

how do i know if a sound device is installed on my pc?

 

any ideas are greatly appreciated

Hi again Lee

 

Right click on My Computer and choose Properties

 

Click the Hardware Tab and then Device Manager

 

Have a look if there are any yellow question marks or exclamation marks at the side of any device.

yeh there are question marks next to multimedia audio controller and video controller. when i double click on the multimedia audio controller it says the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)????

 

any ideas where i can go from here and if it is this that is affecting the sound?

What make and model of pc do you have Lee as you may need an updated driver.

Have a look here and tell me what model it is as I can't see the one you mention.

Look here lee find the model then hit downloads and find the audio driver, it won't let me link direct to the page where it is.

cheers wolfey for all your help have downloaded the audio driver and no we have sound!

 

so far the pc has been ok and not cut out after giving the pan and heatsink a clean.

 

i do however have one more question!! .... when scrolling up or down on a web page certain sites are alot slower at scrolling up and down than others and is annoying. i thought that all sites were like this but there are a few which can be scrolled through at normal speed - any ideas on this one?

You may need to go back to Targa Lee and obtain this driver also;

 

VGA driver version 6.14.10.6387 and WDM driver version 6.14.10.6224 for Windows XP (as shipped)

 

Have a look in Device manager again and tell me you still have any question marks

 

Do that and get back to us

pci simple communications controller

SCRx31 usb smart card reader

video controller (vga compatible)

Ok this is exactly the same situation I had when I've reformatted my Dell box, before I saved all the drivers I had to go to them to get them.

 

Go back to Targa and get all those drivers that are needed.

Just get those and none of the others at this time.

As I said Lee go back to the targa site, locate your model and click the Downloads Tab

In there will be all the drivers that you need for that machine.

Just download the ones that you previously mentioned.

You need to put the MOBO disk in that came with the PC and it will find the drivers that you need - have you used windows update - they are normally on there under 'optional downloads'

I have a problem with my display - when viewing certian websites and scrolling up or down its really slow and really annoying!

Have you installed the latest flash and VGA drivers as previously posted?

You need your Graphics Driver installed your using the Windows Legacy VGA driver which really you shouldnt be slow performance, ugly colors

 

Go download Everest its a tool that tells you exactly what drivers are on your machine if you post the results for your VGA adapter I will download the required driver for you and post it online here.
