Guest benp84@gmail.com Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 I just bought an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ with 2 GB of RAM. Do I need Windows XP Pro to support my dual-core processor, or will XP Home work just as well? Also, is 32-bit better than 64-bit since I run less than 4 GB of RAM? Thanks.
Guest Lano DeMentar Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Re: What Window XP version do I need? even if the CPU is dual core or even 4-core, it is one single PHYSICAL CPU... thus any windows xp version will work... when they say you need pro, it means that you have 2 seperate CPUS on a dual CPU monitor.. not multicore CPUs like yours is... So yes, Home will work. I suggest you go with 32 bit for compatibility of drivers and programs. <benp84@gmail.com> wrote in message news:1185652971.454206.117130@k79g2000hse.googlegroups.com... >I just bought an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ with 2 GB of RAM. Guest RJK Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Re: What Window XP version do I need? Hope you got a good deal on that one, I see it's £99 at DABS, I just finished tweaking up for myself a newish / older generation system box with a "retail boxed" Intel P935 in it, 2 x 3.2ghz cores and 2 x 2mb L2 cache ....£64.98 inc. P&P and VAT. It seems really responsive, ...just like my old XP2600 (1.917ghz) Barton did when I got that ! Finally I could afford to go back to Intel, ....I expect it'll see me out !!! regards, Richard <benp84@gmail.com> wrote in message news:1185652971.454206.117130@k79g2000hse.googlegroups.com... >I just bought an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ with 2 GB of RAM. Do you need to join a domain? Do you need to be able to host a web site for personal use, or professional web development? If you answer yes to any of these, then you should consider XP Pro. You may also want to personally check the XP Home and Pro editions capabilities for yourself. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/default.mspx -- Doug Knox, MS-MVP Windows Media Center\Windows Powered Smart Display\Security Win 95/98/Me/XP Tweaks and Fixes http://www.dougknox.com -------------------------------- Per user Group Policy Restrictions for XP Home and XP Pro http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_securityconsole.htm -------------------------------- Please reply only to the newsgroup so all may benefit. There are no 16 or 64 bit versions of XP Home. XP Pro and Windows Server 2003 come in 32 or 64 bit versions, and then the 64 bit XP Pro version is only available as OEM - it's supplied with the system you paid extra for, by the builder. IIRC, you cannot buy this at retail, you have to buy it from a seller who is going to be the support contact. XP Home does support multi-core processors, but only one physical processor per board. Where you *Need* to not use XP Home is if you have specific networking neeeds (connecting to Domains, running IIS) or need to use encryption, and a few other things like that. HTH -pk
