Beware of SB x-fi update

In updating this evening, there was an update to the

drivers for Sound Blaster Xfi Extreme Audio, which I

retrieved from the site at MS update. This update caused a

corruption in the msvcrt module and directshow - an

unrecoverable update. I now have to reinstall XP windows.

I WILL NEVER TRUST MSUPDATE FOR ANY UPDATES TO HARDWARE!!!

People in this and other newsgroups have been saying that you should update

True, but only if you decide that you really need to update. Otherwise,

dont fix what aint broken.

before you troied the update!

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged

or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so

damaged files will be replaced.

To follow your suggestion you need a Windows XP CD post SP2 or a

slipstreamed version of your original pre SP2 CD and the SP2 update.

I had a similar problem with the driver for my laptop's modem. You should

be able to roll the driver back to the previous version through the hardware

manager (While holding the windows key down, press the [Pause/Break] key.

Select the hardware tab and then 'device manager' Look for your sound card,

right click and select 'properties', and then the 'drivers' tab. The option

to roll back is there.
