access to program files folder

Recommended Posts

hi,

i am unable to access the 'program files' folder located on a windows

xp machine via the

lan. When on th Win Xp machine, if i try right-clicking on the

'program files' folder, and

attempt to give shared access, i am unable to make this change because

the option to tick

has been disabled. Is there any security policies or registry entries

which i can modify on

the Win Xp machine so as to enable this option?

Troy,

Can you browse to it?

Example:

\\[ComputerNameHere]\c$\Program Files

C$ being the drive that Windows is installed on

Please report back

XP Pro or XP Home? If Pro, disable Simple File Sharing from Folder

Options>View tab (last item). You will now be able to share the Program

Files directory although I really don't know why you would want to do

this. It's not a good idea. If you have XP Home, then XP Home does not

permit sharing of users' home directories (My Documents) or Program

Files, but you can share folders inside those directories.

How could OP browse to it if s/he can't even share it in the first place?

Without them being shared on the target machine? And NOT using Terminal

Gary,

XP isn't very secure at all. If it was it wouldn't use plain text passwords &

coding using the LogonUser API would fail too like in Windows 2000

Understood. But this goes beyond those, AFAIC. I mean, what good is the

"sharing" scheme if the whole system is automatically shared, anyway?

Not that I know of. C:\Program Files is a protected operating system

folder, and cannot be shared. There would be no point in doing, as the

applications would not be able to be executed via a share.

The hidden administrative share (C$), which WinXP has in common with

WinNT, Win2K, and Vista, is available/accessible only to those with

administrative privileges to the respective computer. It's not

accessible to lower privileged users.

OK, after further testing I see what you mean. It worked on the machine I

tested with at first because an account exists on that machine that has the

same username and password (doesn't need to be logged into that account,

though.) Just changing the password is enough to cause the connection to

fail.

OK, much less worrisome. Thanks, Bruce. Nice to have the full story.
