Okay Dan, excuse me if I laugh out loud maniacally when you get hacked or

whacked.. see you sometime in the future...

Best do some actual networking research so you get a better understanding

of how all this works..

Dan wrote:

| Okay, I am trying to fix everything now just in case anything from

| the XP side corrupted the 98 side. Although, the XP side is on D:

| and the 98SE is on C: there still may have been something that

| slipped from D: to C: because of user (my error). I have uninstalled

| Sound Blaster Audigy from both XP side and 98SE side. Also, I have

| unistalled Ati Radeon 9800XT from both XP side and 98SE side. I have

| checked extensively for viruses, spyware, adware, etc. and only

| turned up 3 tracking cookies. When I try and reinstall the Sound

| Blaster Audigy it works but it gives me one error message and I am

| clueless as to what this might mean and what to do about it. Well I

| just Googled it and it told me it was related to Windows Media Player

| which I have. I have Windows Media Player 9 on the 98SE side.

| Should I unistall that too?

UnRegMp2.exe is part of WMP9. And it sounds like it is the .inf that does the install of it & possibly the uninstall too...

UnRegMp2.exe

Desc: Microsoft Windows Media Player Setup Utility

Loc: C:\WINDOWS\INF

Size: 192,512 bytes

Mod: Wednesday, December 11, 2002 11:08:28 AM

Ver: 9.00.00.2980

But I think it more likely is MSVCRT.DLL that is at fault. Here is what I usually post for it...

I find (in Win98SE) MSVCRT.DLL is in WIN98_63.CAB. It is also in

SETUPW95.CAB, which is an IE5.5 & IE6 SP1 .cab.

MSVCRT.DLL

Desc: Microsoft ® C Runtime Library

Loc: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

Size: 278,581 bytes

Mod: Thursday, April 06, 2000 08:10:40 PM

Ver: 6.00.8797.0

That is what mine looks like in Win98SE; apparently, it has been updated

by something beyond the Win98 .cabs (v.6.00.8397.0) & beyond the IE6

SP1 .cabs (v.6.00.8397.0)-- by likely one of the IE cumulative updates.

I GUESS begin with an Extract from your more easily accessible Win98

..cabs. After that, look to update it by over-installing IE. OR, maybe begin with the over-install of IE-- I have instructions for that too, if you want.

Here is how to do it in DOS...

(a) DIR /s /a C:\MSVCRT.DLL

Will say whether you have it, & where it is. Should be in

"C:\Windows\System", thus...

C:\>DIR /s /a C:\MSVCRT.DLL

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

MSVCRT DLL 278,581 04-06-00 8:10p MSVCRT.DLL

1 file(s) 278,581 bytes

(b)

"EXTRACT /a /L C:\Windows\System <LOC>\Base4.cab MSVCRT.dll"

That is all one line between the quotes with 5 spaces, but do not enter

the quotes. It will offer to overwite, if one is already there.

<LOC> is the location of "Base4.cab". This may be discovered as

follows...

C:\>DIR /s /a C:\base4.cab

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS

BASE4 CAB 168,960 04-23-99 10:22p BASE4.CAB

1 file(s) 168,960 bytes

If you have the .cabs on a CD, you will use your CD-ROM drive letter,

instead of "C:\" in that DIR command. And probably it will find it to be

located in... "X:\Win98"... where "X:\" is the CD-ROM letter.

So, in my case, the command is...

"EXTRACT /a /L C:\Windows\System C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\Base4.cab

MSVCRT.dll"

All one line: no quotes: there are 5 spaces in the line, including one

after "Base4.cab".

| Thanks for the help and patience

| everyone.

Dan said that he was still using a software firewall in XP but that he had

uninstalled it in Win98se.

Yes, it was a little bit confusing.

Yep. OK, thanks for the clarification! I see it now. It really all depends how good or configurable the router firewall is as to whether the software one is necessary, I think.

And I'll be laughing when your software firewall gets deactivated by

the next trojan or virus that gets onto your system.

By the way MEB, put a little effort into editing your posts. You have

the worst etiquette when it comes to participating in a thread. It's

a sign of being lazy. Don't be lazy. Quote only the text you're

replying to, and delete the rest. Don't drag 3 weeks worth of

previous material into your reply.

>OK, Buffalo straightened me out. But, it really depends on how configurable

Dan's particular hardware firewall is. >If as configurable as Kerio, then he

only needs that one, I think!

I would ask the most viable question:

WHAT the heck would make you think a router can be configured any where

NEAR as tightly as a software firewall regarding software/applications

UNLESS the router includes its own software firewall, but then we are

hijacking a discussion, and you haven't finished your studies.

The TRUELY SAD aspect of this all, is:

Dan has found and formed this opinion; through supposed people he

apparently trusted; that a FRIGGING router is the same as, OR BETTER, than a

software firewall, and provides sufficient protection for his system... and

that, apparently from the News Groups here [Microsoft] and its members and

where ever else they post, and/or elsewhere...

Now one of these occurred:

1. He got this from trusted members here, or from trusted members posting

somewhere else..

2. Or he got this elsewhere, and was NOT corrected when he came here.

Moreover, he also thinks the Microsoft's XP firewall will provide some sort

of protection, should he need it.

FACT: Microsoft's XP firewall provides semi-adequate protection ONLY in a

*local network* environment.

It has built in access points, evidenced by Auto-updates, etc. [blatantly

obvious and well known holes, it came with every hacker's XP system - DUH]:

and provides little protection for OUTBOUND access or software control.

EVERY HACKER knows its defaults, and configuration limits, AND ITS CODE....

Those that claim it is adequate REALLY don't get what does occur while

normal users access the Internet, nor do they apparently care.

We can likely rate this *routers are all you need while using the

Internet*, right up there with advising people to disable their email

protection provided by their Anti-virus programs: that's *pure crap* and

carrying the smell that goes with that.

EVERY little bit or piece you add for your protection is one more piece a

hacker, Trojan, virus, or Spyware has to circumvent...

Re: Error message in Windows 98 Second Edition

Okay, I will do that when I get a chance. My goal is to get 98SE stable

again first. I realize now that my big mistake was when I installed 2

gigabytes of ram to not right away go back to 512 mb's and limit 98SE with

msconfig to see only 512 mb's.

| Thanks PCR! I will try to reinstall IE6 and also try to extract and

| replace MSVCRT.DLL as you suggest.

You are welcome. Here is what I post for an over-install of IE, which

hopefully would give you a fresh & (nearly?) up-to-date MSVCRT.DLL...

Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an

internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If

you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step ©.

(a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's

"StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".

Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab &

disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking

"Load Startup...". Reboot.

(b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end

task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from

top, & skip it next time.

© "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window.

NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there are more

than one (I have two each), click the one in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows

Update Setup Files" or "C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.

(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all

items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot.

(e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers

criticals.

And don't forget to add the MaxFileCache=512000 line under the [vcache]

header in System.ini. (you can also use 524288 instead of 512000)

That line should be added in Win98 anyttime you have more than 512MB of

memory (ram) installed in Win98.

If you install over 1GB , than you may have to limit your ram as you stated

above.

I use 1GB in Win98SE and it works just fine with the System.ini modification

alone.

Absolutely-- let us not hijack this discussion or become overly

MEB, pay attention.

There are 2 aspects of firewall functionality.

1) Inbound handling of unsolicited data packets

2) Outbound handling of packets from unauthorized or unrecognized

local processes.

I will refer to these items as #1 and #2 repeatedly below.

A NAT-router handles #1 IN ALL CASES, be they TCP or UDP. And it

handles this for all computers connected to it on the local LAN. It

is very efficient at doing this, and it does it in a secure manner.

A NAT-router does not perform #2 because it can't.

A software firewall performs both 1 and 2, but only on ONE computer.

If you have more than one computer on a local lan, you already have

NAT, so you are already protected for #1.

Function #1 is a bona-fide protection mechanism that prevents some

systems from being comprimized (this almost never applies to

windows-98 anyways, but it applied almost 100% to Windows 2K, XP-gold

and XP-SP1). Function #1 ->IS<- protection.

Function #2 IS NOT protection. Function #2 is an alert mechanism.

Unless it's a false alarm, #2 tells you that YOUR SYSTEM IS ALREADY

COMPRIMIZED IN SOME WAY. Function #2 is also a pain in the ass to

configure and live with. Because function #2 is only provided by a

software firewall, it can be deactivated by malware or by inadverdant

misconfiguration by the user.

In real life, there are always unwanted / unsolicited packets

hammering away at your internet connection (item #1) so it's a given

that they are more of a threat and should be delt with - moreseo than

dealing with #2.

It is MORE important to deal with #1 vs #2 - do you agree with that

MEB?

So how does this affect the average joe internet user?

If you were to prioritize the various security appliances, software

and settings you could obtain to insure a safe computing experience,

the first item on the list is a NAT-router. Even if you have only 1

computer and you don't need the ability to have a local LAN, a

nat-router will perform your internet log-in for you and will maintain

your internet connection even when your computer is off. This means

you don't need to run buggy or troublesome ISP login software, and

your IP address will remain fixed for longer periods of time (some may

find this useful if you like to operate a web-cam or use PC-Telephone

to communicate with friends and family).

Once you have a NAT-router, you have item #1 covered. Since I place

item #2 far down the list of important functions, I have other items

next (like a hosts file, locking down browsers with spybot and spyware

blaster, updating JAVA JRE engine, etc). At the bottom I place

anti-virus software (it is close to becoming useless these days) and a

software firewall (or more specificaly, item #2) at the very bottom (I

don't run one, I never have and never will).

(I have direct experience with running 10+ win-98 machines directly

facing the internet continuously from 1998 to Dec 2005 ->without NAT

and without any sort of firewall<- so I am well aware of what win-98

is, and more importantly what it is not vulnerable to.)

> Moreover, he also thinks the Microsoft's XP firewall will

> provide some sort of protection, should he need it.

The software firewall built into XP is ONLY an incoming firewall. It

performs function #1 only. Assuming it works correctly at all times,

it is exactly equivalent to what a NAT-router does. But because it is

a process running on the local machine, it is vulnerable to being

tampered with or being deactivated by malware, and for that reason it

is inferior to a NAT-router.

> We can likely rate this *routers are all you need while using

> the Internet*, right up there with advising people to disable

> their email protection provided by their Anti-virus programs:

> that's *pure crap* and carrying the smell that goes with that.

A NAT-router is THE FIRST THING YOU NEED. As I have always said, what

you get next are various reinforcements to your system as I mentioned

above. A software firewall is not even on my list because it has a

negative cost/benefit analysis.

Re: Error message in Windows 98 Second Edition

Thanks PCR!!! I have a total of 3 MSVCRT.DLL --- they are as follows:

1. ver. 6.10.8637.0 ---- located in c:\windows\system

2. ver. 6.10.8637.0 ---- located in c:\windows\temp\crfo\drivers\addon

3. ver. 6.00.8397.0 ---- located in c:\program

files\creative\sbaudigy\playcenter2

I will proceed to try and reinstall Internet Explorer 6 ---- hopefully that

will work. Let me know if I should delete all of these and just replace the

top one with the dll from the 98SE cd or something else. Thanks again!

<bottom test reply> Dan here and testing from Windows 98SE machine

using Mozilla Thunderbird newsreader. PCR, you were so right. I went

ahead and reinstalled Internet Explorer and that really helped a lot. I

am still waiting for the ati cd to come in the mail but I am no longer

getting blue screens of death. I will begin to recheck things in

msconfig startup tab and let you know how things progress.
