Apologies if already on here. I find running a PC is very much like a car but on a smaller scale. You get the brand new shiny model out of the showroom, get it home, amazed by the smooth, fast & efficient performance.

Then in a few years it's like an old banger - ready for the scrapyard. Now ok, a bit dramatic perhaps. With a car, you maintain it, keep it clean, check tyres (tires for our friends across the pond lol) top up oil & water and have regular servicing - all prolongs the life of your little darling.

I've never known how to get the best out of a PC - what are the do's and don'ts? - Yes, firewall & virus protection for internet users. But what about Scandisk? backing up, removal of spyware, malaware all that stuff. How often, which makes - there are millions of people claiming that by purchasing their product, your machine will be like new again. You can't buy them all.

So I propose a maintenance checklist.

Iwill now probably continue searching and find such a thing. I will then proceed to go quietly to a corner from where you may hear two shots. I will probably miss with the first one!

Great site - well done to all. As one who works in Customer Service I can understand the great buzz of helping people.

Steve

What a most excellent post Steve and a very good idea also.

We don't get a lot of threads in S & F but this is one of the best and in fact I'll stickie this.

Thank you for your kind words regarding the forum and your right about the buzz that one gets when a positive result has been achieved, that's why I sit here for 14 hours a day or more sometimes.

I've no doubt some people will think that really stupid but if I or we can help some one nigh upon 24/7 then so be it.

Let's hear the ideas folks.

I think Steve's looking for more constructive advice Dave. :)

Well guys I want to know that what you do is sainted! - You cannot believe how grateful I am. Some people may pass through get help and disappear. You know what I might hang around and pester you guys for years - in a nice way of course lol.

Two reasons the service is great: Obviously the cost. Just check the callout cost - even before repairs. Secondly, the answers and therefore the work are almost instantaneous. No hanging around for a day or two awaiting further instruction. I guess this is the reason for having techs from all over the world, so there is cover at most times. Simple yet fantastic!

My only fear was doing it myself. Always frightened of causing a fatal error, yet the instructions are like a dummies guide - well they must be if I could...... etc. - you guys must get a buzz out of seeing us, but not as much as I got out of seeing my computer on the verge of death now on the verge of health again. I'm recently out of hosdpital and recovering (off work at least another month). This is a great tonic!

Ok I probably shouldn't have put this here, but what the heck? - by the way "Wolfey" it was my other half who put me on to you guys - she call's you Wolfey by the way lol. You were able to hellp her last year - very complimentary - in fact, might have to name you as the "other" party at this rate;)

Lol Steve don't drag me into a menage a trois :D

Seriously though I'm glad we could help her on that occasion and we would like nothing more that to see you "hang around" for years to come.

You'll be offering advice to the members before long should you stay with us and watch and learn.

It's not just down to the Techs to offer advice Steve by all means but obviously we keep an eye on what is posted by other members of Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help in case anything may be inaccurate.

Stay with us and enjoy the ride Steve, you'll not be sorry mate. ;)
