Guest diane Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Recently, we started allowing updates on Windows XP with Office 2007. Outlook crashed, and eventually Internet Explorer crashed. I reinstalled XP, but nothing changed. So I reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled XP, reinstalled Office, installed the updates, and ta-da, everything worked. Then I used Word one time. The next time I tried using Word, *it immediately crashed and then asked if I wanted to restart in safe mode. I said yes, and it crashed and asked if I wanted to restart in safe mode. I said yes. Repeat constantly from the * unless I opt to not restart. My husband tried installing a music program with the same result. The error message reads "This event lasted _ seconds with _ seconds of active time. This event ended with a crash." Even I could have told you that.... Advice? Insight? Anyone? Help
Guest Gerry Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Re: Windows XP SP2 and Word crash Diane Please a copy of the Error / Warning Reports generated in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further information. http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp (Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only) A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. -- Hope this helps. Guest diane Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 Re: Windows XP SP2 and Word crash This is the message in Office Sessions. ID: 0, Application Name: Microsoft Office Word, Application Version: 12.0.4518.1014, Microsoft Office Version: 12.0.4518.1014. This session lasted 1 seconds with 0 seconds of active time. This session ended with a crash. In System, we got this message. The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the stopped state. None of the other options have anything on this date, not to mention relevance. Help For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Guest diane Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Re: Windows XP SP2 and Word crash I appreciate your time, patience, and tact. I copied those messages from Event Viewer--they made no sense to me at the time, either. There are informational messages as well, but they are simply telling me that the CD is starting and stopping. Any insight? Perhaps a ball peen hammer applied to the tower? Thank you. Guest diane Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Re: Windows XP SP2 and Word crash My husband has disassembled the entire computer (in the hopes of what, I don't know), so I will put it back together and recreate the issue and post the contents of event viewer to you tomorrow. Again, I truly appreciate your help. Thank you. Guest Gerry Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Re: Windows XP SP2 and Word crash Diane I'm sitting on the edge of my seat watching the screen <G>! An Event Viewer Report looks like this: Event Type: Warning Event Source: i8042prt Event Category: None Event ID: 17 Date: 30/07/2007 Time: 19:02:49 User: N/A Computer: PC0939 Description: The device sent an incorrect response(s) following a keyboard reset.
