chajun Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 Thanks for the reply. If there's anyway to get the audio issue and the speed up a bit before I blow a fortune. Thank you Quote
Seth Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 You're welcome. First let's have a look at what's running on your computer via a program called HijackThis: Please download the latest version of HijackThis from Trend Micro and click on Download Hijack This Installer and save it to your desktop. Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install HijackThis. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis . Click on Install. It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop. Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad. Include this log in your next reply. Notes: Do not use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted. Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless, or required for your computer to run like it should. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. RandyL Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 On the first question it's always a good idea to backup the address book and save it somewhere besides the main drive. If you do get a new computer it will likely have Vista and Windows Mail and not Outlook Express. If you only use Outlook Express and not Outlook and if you only have one identity I would export the address book as WAB. This format will import all the data seemlessly into Windows Mail. Seth Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 There are a couple of problems showing in the log. 1) You shouldn't be running two antivirus programs. You have to remove one of them. I suggest you remove AVG. 2) You have way too many programs needlessly starting up when your computer starts. Go to Start>Run, type in msconfig and click "ok". Put a dot on Selective Startup and click on the Startup tab. Scroll through the list and uncheck every entry other than Avast. Click Apply then Ok and restart the computer when prompted. 3) Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files. You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next. You can leave the automated check for updates on. You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information. DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button. Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives. Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so. 4) Run hard drive error checking by going to Start>Run, type in chkdsk /f (space between the K and the /), and click Ok. Press Y at the black screen that appears and restart the computer to start the error correction. Following the above four steps, the laptop should run significantly better. Seth Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Avast has to be in there. Did you scroll through the list? Don't forget to remove AVG. That's very important. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Seth Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Don't worry about the services tab. Also, please post the SuperAntiSpyware log when the scan is complete and you have restarted. chajun Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 Not sure what you mean time. There are no actual names mentioned just letters in the first column then things like c:PROGRA \ ALWIL which might be avast but not called avast not sure what AVG might be called as there's no mention of "AVG" Quote
Seth Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 That's not possible. Are you using the scroll bar to see all the entries? Have a look here and you'll see AVG: http://www.technibble.com/articlecontent/msconfig/msconfig1.gif You may have to "stretch" the vertical lines between Startup Item, Command, and location to see the full names.
