Seth Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 (edited) At this point, I suggest a System restore to a date just prior to the problem occuring: 1.Log on to Windows as Administrator. 2.Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts. 3.On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next. 4.On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK. 5.On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer. 6.Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page appears. 7.Click OK. Edited June 4, 2008 by Seth Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. ckrono Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 Dear all, I have also installed the Gigabyte Motherboard Driver. I rebooted my computer and played music and it works fine .. until the error message "Generic Host Services has encountered an error and needs to close." and then i sensed something wrong, i closed the Media Player and tried playing music again. The same message appears "No sound device has been detected." So is the speakers plainly spoilt ? Can someone interpret the Generic Host Services error message ? Whats the connection between these ? thanks for the help.. Quote
maynardvdm Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Hi Go to Start then Run and type msconfig and press enter. Click on the Services tab. Tick the box where it says "Hide All Micosoft Services" Can you tell us what services there is after you checked the box to hide the Microsoft Services. maynardvdm Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Ok lets try this: Go to Start then Run and type msconfig and then press enter. Click on the Startup tab and uncheck everything except your antivirus software or security software and jusched. Then reboot the computer. If this doesn't work then i'll try System Restore like Seth suggested. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. ckrono Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 Sorry, I have looked through my restore points and could not find anything related to my Speaker Problem. The latest one was a day ago before the problem started, and it was the day I installed MapleStory. After the second day then the problem arose. Thus I didn't use the restore point. Quote
ckrono Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 I cant find any jusched in my Startup tab. What do I do ? Quote
Seth Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Sorry, I have looked through my restore points and could not find anything related to my Speaker Problem. The latest one was a day ago before the problem started, and it was the day I installed MapleStory. After the second day then the problem arose. Thus I didn't use the restore point. The restore is not going to show your sound problem. Just restore it to a day before the problem occurred. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. ckrono Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 I have restored as accordingly, and still there is no sound device detected. But GenericHostServices' error message doesnt pop up anymore. Is my speakers spoilt or is the sound card spoilt? Quote
Seth Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Ok Good. Now go to Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. Click on the Audio Tab and under Sound Playback (default audio device), it should say Realtek AC97 Audio. You may have to use the drop down arrow to choose it then Apply. If it doesn't show that, then what does it show? Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. ckrono Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 Ever since the problem arose it shows me "No audio device" and every menu related to speakers are greyed out. When the speakers were working it used to show VIA AC'97 Audio Device.. or something like that. no Realtek at all. Quote
Seth Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 My mistake, I should have said VIA, not Realtek. Go into Device Manager and right click on the VIA AC97. Choose uninstall, then reboot and Windows will reinstall the audio card. Go back to that Audio tab and you should now see the VIA in the drop down menu for the default playback device. ckrono Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 Done that. Successfully reinstalled the drivers, BUT the error message Generic Hosts Services has encountered an error and needs to close." has appeared again. After that appearing my Sound Device VIA AC'97 goes missing again. IM SURE THAT THING IS THE CAUSE !! whats going on with that Generic Host thing? Quote
Seth Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 The Generic host is just that. A "Generic" problem that could have dozens of causes. The most likely being a corruption in the XP files. I doubt you'll be able to fix this unless you run a repair installation of XP. What is the make and model of the PC, and do you have an XP cd or a cd that came with the computer that says "Operating System"? Quote Need help with your computer problems? ckrono Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 I dont have the CD. The make is .. uhh its a self-built computer. the specs are at the first post. I think I have to send it to a local technician then ): thanks for your help anyway, i learnt quite a bit of the computer during this time ;) Quote
Seth Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 NP. Unless any else has some other ideas, I can only think of one more other than a repair install: Use Internet Explorer and go to Microsoft Windows Update Click on the Custom option and obtain all critical updates as well as the audio driver update which may show up in the Hardware Updates tab. ckrono Posted June 5, 2008 Author Posted June 5, 2008 It does not give out any percentage. It shows checking for updates and some kind of moving bar which looks like its a loading bar. I'm about to give up on fixing this thing. I can't even patch my game, watch shows, and its as though my PC is disabled. I might be sending my old mate down to the technician's for help. I still have to thank you guys for the prompt help you have given me. I'll remember you guys when i encounter a problem again. Thanks ! Quote
