I have an existing upstairs and downstairs connection via a router - a mate of mine set it up on the grounds that he knew what he was doing and I couldn't get my head around it.

I have been told, all I need to do is add a "dongle" to my laptop(s) and that will make them internet ready too.

Is it as simple as that? if so any particular type of dongle - is that the correct name for them? - may as well try out the technology, especially as laptops are unused gadgets at present.

Hi

What laptop is it? Some laptops have built-in wireless adapters.

If the laptop doesn't have built in wireless capabilities, then you don't want a USB wireless Dongle. It will stick out about three inches and get snagged by everyone and their dog. What you would need is one of these:

Thanks again guys. No it's an old Compaq Presario 2100 - I say old but have hardly touched it since I bought it several years ago. Never been used other than storing photos and a spreadsheet from when I bought my car (used for running expenses) so at least 5 year old as I had it before my new car.

Seth will the above adaptor or indeed a dongle work more or less plug and play?

A secondary question, we,re about to purchase a new notebook as a 16th birthday present for stepdaughter - I've been advised this has inbuilt wireless adaptor. Presumably again plug and play?

Both will have a cd you'll need to run. Don't worry, it's easy. Just follow the instructions.

The new lappy with the built in wireless won't require you to install anything. You'll see a wireless icon on the bottom right of the screen. Just right click on to a connect to the available wireless networks.
