Quacker Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Have just installed in the past few days Avast as recommended on here. Is it normal for it to run and be active most of the time - in real time compared to AVG which updated daily at a scheduled time? Thanks Steve Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Avast will run constantly Steve, allow it to do so. You will also get updates every so often too. You'll hear this male voice saying; "Virus database has been updated" Quote
Flair4it Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 My oppinion Hi I have used alot of different type of scanners over the years and I must say I Find AVG the Best suitable Platform for me, I reccomend there Internet Security Package. You get full cover for roughly $60 so not bad for us euro / sterling guys :) I think as well that it keeps your computer running smoothly not like other scanners where they slow down machines, Personally, I havent tryed this AVAST but I have seen it on some of my Competitors Machines that have been brought to be repaired, have ran AVG over AVAST have have noticed AVG Found more defected files then AVAST. AVG as a Free scanner years back was the best but they stopped allowing the Free version to be downloaded and stopped the updates for it. There was a big backlash by the public regarding this and AVG came back as free but you dont get full searching capabilitys and techniques that you should that is why I recommend getting the full version for anyone. It is all really matter of oppinion Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Guest Wolfeymole Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 If I could afford it Shane, and hopefully before long I will, I'd get NOD32's Security Suite. It is by far the best all rounder out there. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Agree with Wolfey on this one NOD all the way. Windows live one care is good as an all round package and covers up to 3 PC's for around £37 a year Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
Quacker Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 Thanks again - opinion is a wonderful thing. I don't mind paying as long as it is quality and deffo works. I've begun to appreciate these machines need looking after and serviced (see my suggestion elsewhere lol) just like any other precision bit of kit. I have no preference for AVG or Avast. I used AVG for years as it was recommended. I now use Avast as it was recommended. If there was a product that would act as everything and keep the system in tip-top order I'd have that - unless too costly of course. What is the score with this NOD then? Quote

Quacker Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 Impressive - except it doesn't make toast;) Is that everything covered though? - what about registry fixes, driver updates, adaware, spyware malaware, tupperware etc.? - or are they all the same:o - I'm not au fait as you can tell. Is a one-stop solution better than several regular tests? Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Nothing will make toast Steve, there is no one stop shop answer for all. Net security by the way is no laughing matter as your posts on here have shown. Forget about registry fixes, just procure something like NOD32 Security Suite as the all rounder, or Mix and Match, but make sure they are quality products. Obtain SuperAnti Spyware along with Malware Bytes and run them alongside your existing protection. Don't want to get infected? Don't go to trash sites or porn or poker/gaming sites and download stuff. Don't press pops ups that say Your Internet Security is at Risk (Click here to stop it) At the end of the day Steve use common sense when surfing ok. Quote
Seth Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 (edited) Registry fixes: Avoid Driver updates: Avoid unless you have a specific need to update. Adware/spyware/malware: Use Superantispyware Free Edition. Update and run a complete scan once a week. Tupperware: Avoid the cheap stuff. The lids never stay on! Edited June 8, 2008 by Seth Quote Need help with your computer problems? Yes Wolfey, I know it's no laughing matter, (the above tupperware line was funny though) but at times in the recent past I've been close to breakdown point. As you know it is still ongoing. At least now I found a site and can check in periodically and keep things right. Steve Quote
