Help with laptop on wireless network!!

I have rplaced my daughters wireless dongle on her laptop with a pc card, i can connect to the internet on it but if i want to sign in to any site it keeps coming up "page cannot be displayed" for example i can get on to ebay but if i want to sign in to my ebay it wont let me, i can get on to our homepage but if i want to sign in to get emails it wont let me!. I cant even get into msn messenger (which it did before i changed to the pc card).Can somebody help please my 13 yr old daughter is giving me a hard time!!!

It sounds like you're not actually connected to the net, but rather seeing "cached" pages. Cached pages are regular sites that you go to but they are stored on your computer.

 

Erase whatever is in the address bar and type in:

 

RED / Index

 

Can you get to that site? If not, unplug the router's power cord for 30 seconds, plug it back in, then restart the laptop. Is everything ok now?

What you actually need to type in (but without the quotes) is:

 

"www.red.com"

Did you see my previous post about the hyperlink?

 

If so and that's what you typed in, then try the following:

 

1) Go to Start>Control Panel and double click on Network Connections.

 

2) Right click on the wireless connection and choose Status then click on Support. Write down the "Default Gateway" address. Now click on the "Repair" button. Did Window's say the repair was successful?

 

Now try the internet. If you are still not online, right click on the wireless icon in the bottom right and "View Available Wireless Networks". What available networks show? (Yours should be the one with the strongest signal strength). Try connecting to it again. Does it say it's connected when you do that? And what is the Default Gateway address?

default gateway is 192.168.15.1 ive repaired it and now it says windows did not detect problems with this connection, ive opened RED / Index and its displaying the web page, but i still cant sign into any websites:confused:

What version of Internet Explorer are you using? To find the version:

 

Open IE and click on Help>About Internet Explorer.

She is currently on IE version 6.0 and our router is wgv614a3 (thats the only thing i can find on the router to identify it).

Can you please confirm that you are online by typing in "www.blue.com" without the quotes?

 

If so, restore IE6's default settings:

 

 

1. Open Internet Options.
   
2. Click on the Programs tab.
   
3. Click on the Reset Web Settings button. Click the Yes button to confirm and the OK button when it tells you that the web settings were reset.
   
4. Click on the Advanced tab.
   
5. Click the Restore Defaults button (click the Apply button to save your progress in case of lockup).
   
6. Click on the Connections tab.
   
7. Click on the LAN Settings button.
   
8. Make sure the "Use a proxy server..." box is unchecked and click OK to move on.
   
9. Click on the Content tab.
   
10. Click the Clear SSL State button and then click OK on the window that pops up to confirm.
    
11. Click on the Privacy tab.
    
12. Click on the Default button (if it's greyed out then it is already at default; move on)
    
13. Click on the Security tab
    
14. Make sure that the Internet icon is highlighted and click the Default Level button (if it's greyed out it's on default; please continue)
    
15. Click on the Local Internet icon and click the Default Level button (unless greyed)
    
16. Click on the Trusted Sites icon and click the Default Level button (unless greyed)
    
17. Click on the Restricted Sites icon and click the Default Level button (unless greyed)
    
18. Click on the Apply button as the next steps may cause Internet Explorer to not respond/crash
    
19. Click on the General tab
    
20. Click on the Delete Cookies button and then the OK button to confirm deletion
    
21. Click on the Delete Files button
    
22. Checkmark "Delete all offline content" and press the OK button
    
23. Click the Clear History button and then the Yes button to confirm
    
24. Click the OK button to close Internet Properties
    
25. If you are in Internet Explorer close it and open it again to test the changes

Ok I have never seen that router - do you remember setting up the settings on the router at any point - some you have to go into the router page - its an IP address like 104.105.16.6 (for example)

and you sometimes need to set the router to recognise the devices (dongles by their Mac address) does any of this seem apparent previously?

Excellent.

 

That means your router and PCMCIA card are fine. The problem is with IE6.

 

IE6 is no longer a secure browser. You should have IE7 which is not only much more secure, but has much better features.

 

Download IE7 from the following link, then burn it to a disk or save to a USB flash drive. Install it on your daughters computer and try the sites. If that doesn't help, perform a reset to IE7:

 

 

Internet Explorer 7

 

1.Open Internet Explorer 7.

2.Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.

3.Click the Advanced tab. Click on Restore Advanced Settings.

4.Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset.

 

Oh, at the same time you get IE7, download an alternative browser such as Firefox and install it on your daughter's computer as well. Try Firefox if IE7 fails even after the reset (but it should not).

If the suggestions from my previous post don't solve the issue, then:

 

1) Was the USB dongle working ok?

 

2) Temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall and then test the log in.
