Can't get pass windows logon in safe mode. Now I'm Stuck!!

Recommended Posts

I'm running XP Pro. I was in the process of a virus removal. The removal tool

told me to start up in safe mode as the first step. I went into msconfig and

changed startup to safe mode and then restart. Now I get the windows logon

prompt with the user name filled in and a blank password field. I typed in

the password (it's the same as user) and I get the logon message : "system

could not log you on"

Now I'm stuck at safe mode logon. How can I bypass so I can continue the

steps for me to remove the virus? Or how can I get back to normal mode?

Thanks in advance people.

Try to Tap the F8 until you get the Boot option and elect to Last good

Configuration and see if it will log you in.

Another on the Same Boot Options select Safe Mode and try to log in and

perform the removal of the Virus.

Thanks for the reply nass. After chosing any boot option(s) it still takes

me only to safe mode and windows logon.

I'm going in circles. No matter which option I choose, I can only get safe

mode with password request.

If you've never set a password before the field should be blank. Have

you tried just hitting the Enter key at the password prompt?

I've tried that. I get the same logon message. At this point, I just want to

get back to normal mode boot

I think your friend putting up a fight, does n't like to go away easy. Try

to hook up this HDD to another PC as a Slave and scan it .

What message you get on the log on and what AV scanner are you using?.

As I mentioned Hook this Hard Drive as Slave into another machine with XP

operating system and scan it.

If this not your cup of tea then take the machine to your local shop and ask

them for help, if you have a valuable data let them know.

Do you think that I should just reinstall the OS. I can just reinstall over

XP Pro with XP Home, right? I shouldn't lose any data, files, folders, etc.?

Good point but the OP said He/She use a blank Pass, does it matter if the

blank Caps or not LOL.

Roma,

You cannot down grade windows XP pro to XP Home, and even if it is okay with

the ghost lurking inside your system it will make it bad job.

If you don't have valuable data you can nuke ( clean Install the XP Home)

on this machine.

Best if you take the machine to your local shop or buy a USB enclosure and

use another machine to scan and Get/rescue your Data.

HTH.

No, wrong.

The only way to get from Professional to Home is by a clean

installation, and that entails the complete of everything on the drive

or partition--data, files, folders, and everything else.
