yammer5 Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Hi guys Could anyone tell me which of these CPU's is faster at running 1 program at a time? Intel® Processor Q6600 Quad Core™ (2.40GHz, 1066Mhz FSB, 8MB cache) or XPS 420 E8500 Core 2 Duo Processor (3.16GHz, 6MB, 1333MHz) If you could tell me why as well that would be great. Thanks Jay :) Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Have a read of this Yammer Dual-Core Versus Quad-Core: Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad Processors of New and Old Generations Quote
yammer5 Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 Thanks that was very interesting, im still unsure lol in the tests the MHz were the same on the duo and the quad and the duo came close, but on the duo ive seen the Mhz is higher so im thinking it might beat the quad? Quote
Flair4it Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 hmmm i would go for the quad core altough the 420 is seriously fast system. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Click here
AdvancedSetup Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Its not a matter of faster per say. It depends on what you're going to run on your system. If you're going to run an application like AutoCAD, PhotoShop, 3D Rendering software, etc then the Quad Core will be the winner hands down. If you're just wanting to run a single threaded application then the other would be faster. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Thanks Jay :) As Advanced Setup has said in terms of playing games the second is faster as it has a faster speed - but if the program you are using supports quad core then that is the better choice - on the other hand you can easily overclock the Quad to run at 3.6Ghz per core with air cooling  And that would seriously beat any CPU out there that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg! AdvancedSetup Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Well the Nehalem which isn't even released already smokes every other CPU in its early beta stage. Nehalem . Dalo Harkin Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Only at stock my friend - there is NO WAY that chip is capable of overclocking as much as the Q6600 GO SLACR Quad core from 2.4(stock) to 4.0(Oc'ed) even the newer quads can't run that fast. thats a 16Ghz chip for £150  obviously you need a whopping cooler that would cost £200-£300 but we will overlook that :D Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
Dalo Harkin Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 (edited) UPDATED - the swiftech H20-120 Compact, will now achieve the 4GHZ O'c and will set you back around £130 - the pump is housed in the CPU block and there are 2 variations of this cooler the H20 -120 and the H20 - 220, the 120 is a single radiator and the 220 is a double radiator.
